raphael119: Like ever living thing they should be respected. Nature can be cruel, but animals kill for survival not for entertainment.
Except if you are explaining the behavior of the badger, a cat that plays with a mouse, a pack of domestic dogs gone feral, hyenas killing their siblings even in the womb, sharks in a feeding frenzy, a lot of different males species in a mating competitions, female lions with either lions or competing predators in their territory.
having read through the thread i can't resist the feeling that you start to resemble more and more to Cruella de Vils while the squirells become "the hundred and one dalmatians" to save...
Last winter I had a squirrel in the garage and he was pretty freaked out but he eventually ran straight out the garage door and kept going straight across the street. 2 days ago I had a chipmunk in the house. I was lucky he went in the dining room(hiding under an antique make up table) which is close to the front entrance so I opened the door and with a broom handle I touched his tail and he headed for the door and out he went. Chipmunks are the cutest.

Be aware of local laws involving squirrel hunting.
One thing to be aware of is that squirrel is considered a game animal, so there are regulations, bag limits, and seasons. In some states, so long as the animal is within so many yards of your home (50 in the case of South Carolina), and you are far enough away from a populated area (discharging a firearm in city limits is highly illegal), you may kill it. You will just have to familiarize yourself with the laws, and your local Department of Natural Resources will be glad to answer any questions you may have. It is as simple as calling them .....

I agree but a lot of that behavior you cite is based on species survival, territory necessary to survival, mating competitions are usually harmless rituals, I' ve fed feral dog packs before, even male lions killing cubs relates to species survival.

jac379: So John, the squirrels are outwitting you.
And the only way you can think of to outwit them is to blow their brains out.
I am not a vegetarian so I am guilty as well since someone is killing some animals for me to eat. I used to be a vegetarian for some years, though.
Killing animals, for the reason that hey are bothering you is not different from killing an animal for fed., because we do have millions of options to feed on.
So the question would be better addressed to all the ones that eat meat of any source and I think that will be millions.
To all that have posted in this thread, either with a positive comment or negative comment.... The issue at hand has/is being handled as efficiently as possible. No more wondering how to solve, but thankful of seemingly progressive positive action/results..
Not sure how to delete/remove this thread, so I guess it's up for the duration, of continued comments. Enjoy...

Millions of predators.
Yes, I agree with your logic. People eat meat, therefore John's not being outwitted by squirrels.

Ok
Then I do agree with your reading comprehension!
Good, because I didn't mention anything about eating the squirrels, or the ethics of eating animals to survive. The implication of my post was that the squirrels were using their wits more than John.

Maybe not, Jac.... I'm the victor in this, and haven't seen a single one for the last 2 days!
But still keeping an eye out for them... just incase... I need to implement my tactics once again... but so far, so good....

Yes, those little creatures are witty and they can outwit you or me as well, that is why there are squirrel's feeders, instead.

I was temped to ask for your rifle John to shoot the females aphids (from my plants), because they keep coming in 100’s, 1000’s…..instead I am using a strong water-sprayer but still I have some of them.

You could have borrowed it, if needed. But I didn't need it for my previous idea... Really didn't want to shoot them, so I worked out a way, so I didn't have to... So, it is available for your worms, if need be. (but you'd have to be one hell of a shot to go after them aphids.... so, more spray power with the hose might be the best plan of action for you issue.....

jac379: Nah, victory would be in outwitting them.
But we do not know what the goals of John were. Perhaps, he just wanted to reduce the population.
jac379: Do you put dish washing liquid in with the water?
Yes, I do.

Thank you John.
I can not use a hose because there are neighbors below my apartment so I have to be very careful when attacking those bugs with water.
Squirrels are beautiful as any animal in the wild.
Here when I see one I stop and try to take a picture of them. Once I did see one on the top of a very tall and spiny cactus plant taking the nectar of the flowers. That could have been a NatGeo pic.
How did that squirrel got there??? And how she was going to go down???
