I notice sometimes I can see the 800 number but the owner is unknown. I won't answer such myself. I figure if you want to talk to me about something you can allow the system to display who is calling otherwise forget it. I note that banks and credit card companies you have accounts with DO display, American Express, MasterCard, etc., so I don't see a downside in ignoring mystery callers. What is your opinion?

I normally don't answer 800 calls but two days ago I did. I have a maintenance plan with Dell for my computer and thought it might be them, but it wasn't.
It's a good thing I did answer because recently the Russian credit card hacking got my credit card. The bank was calling to update me on what was being done about my card.
They wouldn't have left a message about something like this. Probably would have continually called and I would have kept ignoring it. That would have been bad.
I don't answer toll free calls or calls marked unavailable or restricted. I also have what I call a "Do not answer" list. This is populated by telemarketers, fund raisers, politics, promo's from ins co's, and other businesses. If I get a call from another state I wont answer it and search the number on google and it's almost always a telemarketer with scores of complaints against them. I got one today from Miami which I answered and it was a recording by someone speaking Spanish.

me neither. I have caller ID and won't answer any phone call that I don't recognize the source

to answer your question - NO I won't answer. you can talk to my machine
Not one person in our house scrambles to answer the phone. My daughter has her cell phone and my son and I just let it go to voice mail. I HATE talking on the phone, makes my head buzz badly.
chatonlyman2: You still have to get up and look unless you got the phone close by. Thats when I decide to optimise the move. Be it grabbing a bite to eat or other.
I never have to get up to look cause the way my cable service is set up the numbers come across my tv screen.

No, I don't have to look. I have a phone that talks. I got it from RadioShack in the US. It tells me when a call comes in, the phone will say that 'call from 012-345-6789' or 'call from unknown' and wherever i am in my 1 bedroom apt, i can hear this and respond if i want to.

Be careful, in the UK some time last year, a group of scammers were calling people saying they were the recipients Bank, they asked certain security questions and then said the card would be reactivated. However, they emptied the account!!!
If my bank calls I ASK THEM FOR PROOF, and usually suggest they write to me, it's by far the safest!!

I have had calls telling me not to let scammers steal my hot water tank. Its true... Last time they called I said "I just seen 2 guys running down the street with a watertank with water still dripping out of it..should I call 911" She laughed and said"No" and hung up.

The way it started Riz is I got an email saying there might be fraudulent charges on my card and that I should call the bank
I called the bank and it turned out that they tried four times to make charges at gas stations. The first two were denied, second two sent through. One of the charges was for 138.00. I don't know of any car that can handle that much gasoline so I'm thinking it was a tractor trailer that made the charge.
The second charge was for 1.98 at the same gas station. Wonder what he bought
So the bank said they cancelled the card and a new one would be on the way
I got the new card and they followed up with several letters
About four days after I got the new card is when I got the phone call to follow up on what happened.
So it's all good for now
I'm sure it will happen again.
Just today hackers got into 206 hospitals in the U.S. stealing 4.5 billion patients hospital records

You're already camped up doing the "royal wave" at the tv in MY lounge, transforming all over the place....and Pete, well...I dunno. I'm trying to work out what he's doing?

I do not answer any 800 numbers and I figure if the caller is legit then they can leave a message for me to call back and stating who they are and why they are calling.
