I am not a smoker! There is a reason I don't smoke and I think I know what it is. Can you, a smoker say why you ARE a smoker? Probably not though you do have reasons to explain it. I believe I am not a smoker because my brain did not inherit Nicotine receptors from my parents or their parents none of whom ever smoked cigarettes. As a result, I abhorred my first cigarette. It burnt my tongue, made me sneeze, gave me a headache, and burned my eyes. Not all people react this way to their first attempt at smoking a cigarette. Some people enjoy their first cigarette and these are the people who, if my theory is correct, become smokers, often lifelong smokers who try multiple times to quit, usually with little success.
Over the years and in no formal way but only when the opportunity allowed, I would ask people if they enjoyed their first cigarette. I noticed an overwhelming correlation between people who enjoyed their first cigarette and became smokers and those that didn't and did not.
Please vote as honestly as your memory allows in my poll and we may learn something fundamental about why some people smoke and some don't..........or not.
I've smoked on and off. I smoked regularly before for a few years. For whatever reason, when I wanted to quit, I could without any hesitation or the overbearing desire to pick up another one. I found that smoking really isn't my thing. I haven't smoked in awhile now and don't have the urge. Besides, it's way expensive!

jlw45: yep, i need to do something...its an awful habit ....
Don't reproach yourself, Joel. Its something that takes a grip and is soooo hard to combat. It's understandable, love.
Some people spend their whole lives trying to give up. I think shame on those who get us started in the first place, yeah?
But at least try? If you relapse (which is to be expected) don't punish yourself, I think the key is to focus on what you manage to achieve, not what you don't. Perhaps each time you will go further?

I hear you, buddy. I need to quit it too. So far, I fall into the category of "tried to quit several times". I've cut back recently...keep trying to get it further down and work toward quitting, but it's not working so far.

yea, me too...i was going to start smoking my pipe, to wheen myself off cigerettes...but, that would be trading one bad habit for another...although, i think the pipe looks better .....
Jan1305: Sorry oobie , but I don´t agree with your theory.
I´m a smoker, neither of my parents, or grandparents ever smoked, and I loathed my first and many subsequent cigarettes.
I often loathe a cigarette now, so I think it´s time to quit.
Thanks Jan, you've added evidence to my theory. You said "I loathed my first and many subsequent cigarettes" "neither of my parents, or grandparents ever smoked". These 2 statements actually support my theory. You were born without nicotine receptors in your brain. Hence, you didn't enjoy your first cigarette. In your case I'm confident you made a conscious effort to get over the unpleastries of smoking and eventually you were successful. I think for you it was most likely peer pressure which was driving you. With continuing use, nicotine receptors are created which you now have and if I'm correct you will pass them on to your offspring. Again this is just MY theory and it may be totally wrong but I think it has at least some merit worth looking into.

Yes.... I am not being pedantic, love.... nor dictatorial, yes... concerned!!
Falling OFF the wagon's okay.... as long as you intend to get back onto it again?

i don't think it's just YOUR theory ...i think they use the same theory with alcoholism... i think

Thanks oobie, but sorry, wrong again. My two adult kids have never smoked and have no wish to. Peer pressure though is a deciding factor in my case ar least.
However, you can keep twisting this theory of yours to suit, and here´s something else to enable you to do so, my kid´s father also has never smoked.
Now you can tell me that this is why the receptors somehow got blocked on the way!
I´m not getting at you or your theory, it is interesting, but sometimes people start smoking and continue without having any influence from their parents, nor passing it on to their offspring.

Virtually everybody has tried at least one cigarette in their life(Vote Below)
