I usually suggest going out for coffee/tea first. It's a good way to be able to meet in public and get to know each other, and if neither has pressing plans, you can always extend it to something else. If you do have other plans that prevent that, and it goes well, then a second date can be made for one of the other options on the list.
A picnic would be good too, but here it would have to be in a park. I would definitely keep that first meeting public...unless it's an LDR and one of you is traveling quite far for the date.
For a very first date - coffee would be good. No plans for after, so if things go well perhaps you can spend a bit more time together. If the date is a dud - then at least you've had a good cup of coffee.
Coffee. for the reasons la Prairie talked about. But also dinner, you can learn things about a person while you are eating food with them that you might not catch otherwise. NOT a movie. How can you possibly get to know someone at a movie?
Oh, and with coffee you can stay awake to go dancing, take a walk, other stuff afterwards. Coffee is a great starter course for a date.
I read somewhere that men like dates that are exciting like roller coasters and rock climbing because when that stuff makes them excited, it feels like the girl they're with is exciting. I'll have to take their word for it because I don't do any of that stuff.
amahlala: Exactly what targets are you shooting at? Are they upright to begin with?
the posibilities are endless.... and that's why a target shooting date is always fun.... kind of like the 'ol box of chocolates thing.... you just never know what you are gonna get !!!!
and you never know if/when she gets proficient, the you can move on to them moving targets where the challenge and scores reeaaally go up !!!!
I always suggest meeting for drinks - I don't know about you guys, but even after doing the whole "blind date" thing for awhile I'm still usually nervous, and having a glass of wine or a beer first thing usually helps me open up and be myself.

Ah! The thrill of the hunt in an obscure odd fashion - what a truly unique first, second, third date concept! I think it would work-you should franchise your idea!

yeah... problem is i keep advertising myself for cheap and if i franchised it then i'd make too much money !!! that would just take the fun out of it.....
ya know... may have to trade my double wide for a mansion and the 'ol beater for a brand new Hummer.... no way in hell im ever trading them flannels for one of them Amani suits (or whatever they are called)!!!!!
i mean can you imagine me drinking champagne instead of Schmitz???
I agree with you on this one. I'm a hopeless romantic, so a nice dinner out somewhere would be my choice. Wether or not it becomes romantic is uncertain. Hopefully! Doesn't need to be "fine" dining (expensive) but should be somewhere nice, with a good atmosphere & not a lot of noise.
I know a lot of people choose coffee, but in MHO that is more of a meeting, or a look over...than a "date". I've always felt a movie is not a good idea for the "first" date, because you want to be able to talk to each other and look at each other and get to know one another. Sitting in a pitch black theater for two hours with someone you don't know very well, is not my idea of fun. Also, the your house thing surprises me. I'd never do that. But then again, I'm a little cautious, from past experiences.
