i haven't been in that position, only been in the postion to witcness some guy hitting his girlfriend and continue harrassing her. ended up calling the police only to have both deny that anything had happened. The only positive was that at least it stopped.

lion131: if it was a big, strong criminal, and they were armed, probably not! if it was a kid, maybe you would have a go?

Yes I would even if I ended up getting arrested in the process. Such an act I could not let happen in front of me as the feelings of guilt if I did not help that person would remain with me for the rest of my life. It is about doing what is right in life to help others in great need and danger.
I don't believe in killing, but I do believe in torture so if I did catch a mugger, a few broken bones never killed anyone and then maybe he will think twice next time.
Yes, as SoldierByte has said, we took an Oath in the Military to protect and to defend the innocent. It seems that Oath is bestowed in many of us Vets till we die. I guess its an Honor thing.
I once intervened............ I was very angry and I scared the crap out of the person doing the mugging. The mugger saw me running towards him and shouting and ran away!

I didn't realise I was so ugly!
Oh, I forgot......... another time, about five years ago, my neighbour's front door got smashed in (in the UK) and youths threatened to set her house on fire. Her boyfriend, a security guard, got beaten up....... they literally dented his car by smashing him against it. All because the boyfriend yelled at them from a window for dumping a car outside they'd stolen and been 'joy-riding'.
I heard the commotion, at about 3 a.m. in the morning, and quickly got dressed (not sensible to get yourself beaten up in your underpants, is it?) and grabbed a broom and shot outside; again they ran off - this time four fit young guys who I am sure could have easily overpowered me.
The police had been called and chased and caught one of the youths...... who promptly assaulted the policeman!
The one guy caught got away with it. He admitted assaulting the policeman, but pleaded not guilty to beating up my neighbour's boyfriend whose body was covered in bruises from the beating he took. Even though he admitted assaulting the policeman he got away without prison or even a fine; almost unbelievable!
I went to court as a witness with the security guard and we weren't even called to give evidence.
Sometimes I wonder if there is such a thing as justice!
Evidence is a few marks on the kids body to show you actually hit him, he was there and he cannot deny getting a black eye.
However, in the case of many against one, pepper spray works great. That is if you don't know self defense. Or even if you do, it helps from them making a bruise on you.
However, I travel everywhere with a gun. Some would cringe at the thought, but here we are able to carry weapons on our persons and in our vehicles and its legal. There is a gun in every room of the house..just in case some fool tries to enter my home unwanted at some late hour. However, I do know self defense as well. But, why ding myself up when I can use something else to deter the intruder or mugger and prevent further incident to myself or to protect other innocent people. Probably more arguments from those who hate guns, but it is just I have had extensive training with weapons so it benefits me to have them handy.
Yes, some are not threatened by guns when they have several themselves. Such as the gangs in Chicago, which I have had an encounter with over an old girlfriend in the service. Somehow she got on a date with one before I met her, but they were not going to let her go so easily. Anyway, it took a little more than a gun to settle the dispute. I needed an Army of men, which of course friends are good for that in the service. However, nobody was harmed and the gang left her and her family alone. It was a close call. But it was needed to protect her and her family.
Now, to say if I saw a mugger on the street mugging some woman or other helpless man, I would probably most likely use my body as a weapon instead of a gun, unless he had a gun, then it would have to be the choice to use my gun to defend all on the street including myself. Now if its just a man beating up his wife, then there is no reason for any weapon, just a nice knock along side his head and maybe a little torture from me and of course me holding him down for her to beat on him for a while before the police arrive..of course all in the name of self defense..of course. Mostly it would be because I can't stand to watch any woman get beat up, even on a movie it disturbs me and angers me. It might be considered excessive force, but usually the police take a while to get to the scene so there is time to make sure the woman gets her revenge on the man who beat her up and of course the truth is she was defending herself..as it would be testified in a court of law. Justice is sweet.

I'd like to think I would, as others have said. I would definitely be most likely to jump in if a child or an elderly person were the victim of the mugging. I definitely wouldn't give chase to get back a wallet or a hand-bag for someone - having been the victim of an armed hold-up myself, I've learned that IMO you are safer if you just cooperate. I would like to think I'd intervene to protect someone else's safety.
Have intervened b4 and was also Lucky I was not hurt, as I could have been. The guy got away b4 cops came but none of us were hurt.
The Cops told me I was very, very Lucky, as the guy was also a 10 most wanted. But to think twice in the future b4 intervening. Infact told me, to next time just call them.
I also set my Late 3 large Breed Shepherd mixes out on one occasion and all activity left the area.
Hopefully, I will get the Dogs I now have up to speed soon so they can do the same. Lab mixes take soooo much longer to train than my Shepherd mixes did.
I would with out hesitation at least I would like to think I would I have tried to stop fights between teenagers in the street even guys and could not even get close enough to pull them apart it is nothing like you see on TV these people are out for blood it madness all I think about is it could be my daughter or nephew or sister or mother I have to do something
