jdunne1980: This should not even be an issue these days. If you do the same job as someone else then you are entitled to the same money. However I do have to disagree with the issue above as I feel the the men do deserve more money. I would base this on performance. The crowds / ratings you draw deserve more money. However while some will think of me as a typical male, I would like to make one point. If and when a time comes when women out draw the men in crowds and ratings then I would support the women earning MORE than the men as fair is fair. And the same goes for every sport.

Interesting point about the sports. But what about if you look at it from the other side, and ask yourself why it is the men's sports events draw bigger crowds? Tradition perhaps. But also probably because the prize money is more, which means the whole event becomes a higher-rated event, getting more publicity, etc. The only way the women's event would achieve the same status, would be to have the same prize money, and that way get more publicity and more crowds - not the other way around.

The same goes for many other situations in society where gender equality is concerned.

Nina3: Interesting question to post as a thread, since most people in the Western world at least nowadays see it as obvious that equal work should give equal pay, regardless of gender, etc.

There are laws regulating this in most, if not all, European countries - but even in countries with a long history of gender equality, such as the Nordic ones, these problems still exist. Women are overall still not getting equal pay compared to men for the same jobs. And I am talking about the normal jobs - not the glass ceiling.

And this is in 2009, in the most gender equal societies of the world... makes you wonder, doesn't it?...

Hi Nina. I´m sure inequality of pay still exists in perhaps a handful of private companies, (I´m speaking of Europe again) but I can honestly say that in all my working years in a number of countries, I´ve always been paid the same as my male colleagues.

Many of my classes today are based in a very well known, international company originally founded in Sweden, and there is absolutely no discrimination in so far as pay is concerned, now or in the fifties when it began, so I´m not entirely convinced about your reference to Nordic companies. However, as I´ve already said there is undoubtedly some pay discrimination lingering, mostly in small private companies.

The "glass ceiling" is another debate and still exists all over the world.

By nature of a mans more physical prowess is the sporting arena (me excluded) they are always going to attract bigger audiences (Unless it is beach volleyball) Therefore more revenue to distribute. Only one exception I can think of is Wimbledon where woman are on parity with men.

So get ya shorts on Nina.

When the Department of Labor figures the statistics on men's/women's pay, they compare people doing the same work. There is no comparison of nurses to doctors, for example. It is people in the workforce doing the exact same work. And women are paid less. Is anyone actually surprised? We still have a way to go....

Shorts? Ha, ha - when I am good and ready, maybe! laugh

I beg to differ with your opinion - although true that men are by nature more physically capable compared to women (with the exception of some specimens), this does not in itself necessarily equal higher interest in their sports events. You mention tennis as an example yourself (why only Wimbledon - if one tennis event can be equal, so can others).

And then there are all the kinds of sports where male physical prowess is not always an advantage, and where the female games often draw big crowds - horse jumping, gymnastics, synchronised swimming, high diving, down-hill skiing, shooting, golf, etc, etc.

Hi Jan. Good to hear that you have been fortunate enough to work for good companies, with fair wages.

I do maintain though that there are still today many instances of employers on the surface looking like they pay equal wages to men and women, but once you scratch a bit on that surface, you find all sorts of inequalaties. I know what you mean, the Scandinavian countries have a relatively long history of employing staff on gender-equal conditions - officially. This is of course the information given, but the true stories are not always told.

This has in fact been an object of public debate many times in Sweden recently, where both small and large private companies, as well as employers in the public sector have been found to still be paying out higher wages to men than women for exactly the same job (as well as discriminating against women when initially employing staff). And this is despite the long tradition of gender equality and the abundance of strong laws regulating this in Sweden.

That really has not held true in my observation....particularly when the men are over 50 and have an enlarging prostate.... Nice try, though! applause

I completely disagree. Men are not more physically "capable" as you put it than women. I am quite offended to have read this. Women in fact are MUCH MORE CAPABLE as they are the ones able to participate in CHILDBIRTH. Women's physical structure is ectremely capable and extremely strong. Besides, brute strength was necessary back in the day, but today where technology dominates, brute muscular strength is no longer a necessity. In today's society, as women have complete control over their bodies with things like contraception, women are just as capable to do anything as men can do. Men are not more physically capable than women, as women are capable of doing anything to the same calibre as a man (excluding only matters of pure MUSCULAR strenght.)

My point is, women are extremely capable at some things that men can never be and will never be, and of course men are more capable at things like matters of muscular strength. Both of these disparities in "capability" come from purely natural sources and cannot be changed. Women are just as healthy as men (if not more) on average and can accomplish just as much as men when given the opportunity. Consider this, when our world is genuinely dominated by technology (which will happen someday as we are advancing so quickly even now) physical "capabilities" between men and women will not even be questioned, as all humans are capable of using computers, technology and machines. There will not be a necessity to compare female and male "capabilities" as practically all labour work will be eliminated by machines. In a world like that, in fact, women would possibly have "superior capabilities", as they would remain capable of both giving birth AND achieving the same things as men.

You cannot categorize people. People come in all types, with capabilities stemming not from gender or race or any label, but from the person themself, their interests, education and ambition. You cannot consider someone who gets 4.0 averages "smarter" than someone who scrapes a 2.0, or smarter than a disabled person or a senior who had less education as a child. Capabilities and skills stem simply through the Circumstances of your life (ie: where you live, education available, social status, rights, equality, money etc.), and through personal motivation, goal setting, interests and ambitions. I don't believe any one person is more intelligent than the other, I just think that it depends on circumstances of living, personal ambitions, level of laziness and the amount of effort you exert achieving your goals.

Sorry for the rant. Cheers ! :)

freemind63: I don't even understand how this could be questioned realy.

For the same work ofcourse.

Last year there was a huge controversie amongst male and female tennis profesionals.
At some tournement (forgot the precise details) woman got paid the same as men.
Quite a few men argued that this was not fair, for two reasons. For one, in general, men play 2 sets more, and secondly men attract much more vieuwers and therefor advertising income.

But, same work, same salary, ofcourse!

Mens and women's tennis should be equally paid..scold

Simply because they play two more sets should not determine to assume that less effort, training and committment is given by the women.

Tennis is different now than it was years ago. One only has to look at the Williams Sisters to see that as much training, and working out is needed for the women to be in the top tier, as it is for the men.

The effort given is the same: the pay should be the same.

I think the tennis and such like could be measured on the entertainment value, eg some singers, actors and actresses get paid more than others. It all depends on the crowds they draw, doesn't it? Look at football - some players get over £100k a week, but some hardly get anything. It's all about the level of success. I'm not saying it's right though, but that's the way it is right now.

As for the poll - I can't believe some people actually answered 'no'!!! doh I didn't realise there were knuckle draggers on CS (and one of them is a woman I belive - I hope she earns less than her male colleagues).
