equiya: It used to be a country, not anymore. And not according to the European Union. So why do I have to dial 44 country code when I call someone in Belfast?
Try telling the Welsh, the Scots or the Irish they are not a country anymore, or they are all English now

Steve5721: Sorry love, but England is a country in it's own right. 4 Countries make up the United Kindom, then we have Great Britain which is 3 countries...plus outlaying islands.
yes, England is a country, and this probably a technicality that Americans (north) and Canadians strugglw with becasue european countries change their political status and sometimes their names relatively frequestly.
So the UK is composed of countries - what is the UK?
Steve5721: So the Queen of England is no more? We'd best tell her.. and we had best tell the English football team not to go to South Africa because according to the EU, we are not a country anymore.
The reason why you dial 0044 because that is the international code for the UK.....covers 4 countries.
Yes the Queen of England is the Head of State in Canada too, yet I have no right as a Canadian to come and live in England. I applied and was turned down, even t hough I have a half-sister who is British and I was the legal guardian of a minor who lived there and is British. When I come to London with my Canadian passport and I go through immigration, I have to go through all OTHERS line, NOT EU, EU and Switzerland.

The United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy and unitary state consisting of four countries: England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. It is governed by a parliamentary system with its seat of government in London, the capital, but with three devolved national administrations of varying powers in Belfast, Cardiff and Edinburgh, the capitals of Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland respectively. The Channel Island bailiwicks of Jersey and Guernsey, and the Isle of Man are Crown Dependencies, which means they are constitutionally tied to the British monarch but are not part of the UK.

She is Head of State in Australia and New Zealand too (and many others) and they don't have the right to come and live here...neither do we Brits have the right to come and live in Canada......but that is nothing to do with your quite categoric statement of England isn't a country!
It's obvious you have to go through other lines at the immigration as you are not a member of a country from the EU!
I've no idea where you worked when you did so in the EU, but trust me love, your statement that England is not a country is WAY OFF.
Englishman55: Precisely Jimmy....... you beat me to it

If the English win or even dare to beat the Scots, I would, as an Englishman, seriously get the hell out of that bar..

GingerBe: There are no free countries, but the most peaceful are the most uninhabited with no resources.
But there is a more philosophical question of whether man is free. Does your freedom end where mine begins? If we live as organized social animals total freedom cannot be possible.
I like the US for freedom, not just because I am thru & thru American but becasue freedom of conscience is protected by our Constitution.
(that our current President probably has not read sorry - bad joke)
We here also protect by law your freedom of speech, but there can be local restrictions - on example - obscenity. Which brings me back to freedom pf conscience - no restrictions there, no one in the US can force your belief system, and you are free to have your religion here too- tho the practices cannot usually interefere with local & state law....
Tho' I admit to knowing little about the constitutions from other nations in the "free" world.
