I was actually a Moderator on a large biker site...and if you think dealing with bikers is fun, think again! I did that job for 6 years, yes it is unpaid and a thankless job.
We didn't have 'jail' on that site, but what I did was to drop offenders a polite note to curb their comments and take a step or two back. These note's were from me personally (as a Mod) and they could write back if they wished.
If others had a problem or a complaint, they had the freedom to contact any of the 4 Mods on that site. We also had our own Forum where people could ask questions, complain etc.
We were able to delete individual posts or even threads, we certainly didn't lock a thread if there was a problem, rather take the problem away instead of just leaving it. If I did delete an individual post, I always let the poster know and the reasons for it.
As a Mod, you have to be fair and not biased...but we were certainly involved on a daily basis and people knew who the Mods were.
6 years...but it was fun at times.

Perhaps locked or the offending commments deleted but the overall thread left in. Well, I just blew my chance at being a Moderator any where with this post . . . Thats your opinion......if a few people that had accounts on here,that watched what was going on all the time,some of the troll threads might get deleted before it went to far and good people got ban.....just my opinion....but i am sure it would be a thank less job...Waz

There is another site that I'm on, that allows the O/P to moderate his own posted thread. When it starts to get ugly in your thread, you can block that poster from participating any further. Nice!
