I do not believe I have ever asked this question, certainly not in a personal relationship.
To me it sounds like a defensive reaction to not being treated well by that person.

ever wondered how they read your energy and body language... what ever your thoughts, feelings and actions are and how accountable you are of those 3 things within yourself will determine and dictate how you are coming across cos it will definitely effect your energy and body language which in turn sends messages... so going by how women ask this question "what do you want from me" according to your experiences... you r either being way to demanding or are associating with women who r afraid to commit... or a 3rd scenario... you r being way to demanding which has the women you r associating with react in a afraid to commit tone due to being overwhelmed... ARRRR!! what do I know

Yeah, but i am afraid because even my gf ask me this same question a year ago before with broke up. I think in my own view it simply means they are already in love with you, so they just want to know your mind, and if you feel thesame way for them since women are most times passive, so do not show there intention in action.

i said it a couple of times to my ex...when no matter what i said in a conversation satisfied. so i got tired of going over everything again and again as he clearly wasn't listening to the answers!

That is a good response from your own experience. Some people think you must have dated a million women to be asked this question but honestly speaking, you can be asked thesame question by thesame woman over and over again. What trick me most is that...some women already know what your up to but they still go ahead and ask you this question. Is it right?

I'm guessing it usually happens if they feel they're being pressured and are frustrated. It think it's their way of bringing it to a head to deal with it.
There could be times when a woman might ask that early on as just a way of trying to see what a man expects and tone would be different, inquisitive and not defensive. This isn't the most likely possibility, though, in my opinion.

i have asked the question before but my reason has been the man i am dating is giving me mixed signals. example you are saying the right things but your actions are conflicting so i start ignoring you and you start demanding more so i ask what do you want from me , more or less it is the deal breaker for me if you say i want something with youand i bring it to your attntion that you are not behaving like that is what you want then I will bring it to your attention. If no change in your behavior occurs then you will be Xed in a hurry. what is that saying "drop the zero to find a hero" this is just my reason for asking and i must make it clear i only ask if i am getting mixed signals.
