depends on your expectations, if its just a special friendship then yes, if you mean an actual relationship with either or both partners travelling over once in a while i'd say it becomes difficult. If you intend one of the two to permanently move to the other's country, again it depends on culture, background, language barriers and both person's willingness to compromise and to adapt, but yes it can work out with the right person
Scubadiva: I think one must move. How else can it work?
In fact, I will go one step further. Because of the visa and residency requirements, you may end up having to get married.
So true, and thats where it gets hard. Its easy to chat with someone or even travel. But the moving and becoming a citizen of another country is a lot harder. Is it worth it? Maybe?

Chatting and visiting is one thing, but moving, working and living elsewhere is another. Don't even think citizenship...just getting residency can be a problem. By the time you overcome all those obstacles, you might as well just get married....
cincity: Yes it can work It all depends how much you want it too and eventually one would have to move to the others country.
In that case you buy one way ticket, from my personal experience i would advise you walk/swim to your beloved ones country and save the ticket for returning back home (or wherever)

I agree. It becomes a little more complicated when one has to take into account one's children, father of children, etc... but not insurmountable I suppose!
venusinsilk: I think you can make anything work if the desire is strong enough.
(and if you have enough money to either, stay in the new Country on your own , or to get back home) As long you dont rush into it and have it all worked out before..... sure it will work
morganm223: I am just curious to see what other people think. I am not in one but I am not opposed to them.
if both people are honest from the start and are actually attracted to each other in every way - then yes. dishonesty spells disaster and disappointment. you need courage, knowing the chances of failure and accepting them, you need the will to work for the relationship and patience while waiting for the precious moments also, to be prepared to do what ever is necessary to be together.
in short - possible but highly improbable - and i'm in one!
