bodleing: Vengeance is a natural and understandable reaction when children are harmed, it's a very emotive subject. However, a civilised society has to strive to meter out punishment that doesn't then render itself uncivilised.
Some of the suggestions in this thread are truly bordering on barbaric.
venusenvy: For me its the issue of hypocrisy...Its against the law to kill someone so if you do we will kill you
I don't see the act of raping and murdering a woman to be the same as executing the guy who did it after a fair trial, so I don't see it as hypocrisy at all. I think manslaughter, murder, euthanasia, killing in battle or self defnese; are all different things. Ultimately, they have "a death" in common, but we know that digging, plowing, tunneling and grading are all different things, too, even though they have "moving earth" in common.

NCC1968: AND give 'em some work to do. It can be from sitting at a bench assembling small items to outside in the heat building roads by hand......whatever is needed and depending on their attitude and obedience.
NCC1968: I'll prob catch some heat on this but......
We seems to have been talking more (not all) about crimes, punishments and emotions.
We sometimes forget that we are talking baout PEOPLE....living humans. Yes....I know crimes that carry capital punishment and some that don't really make the person appear not human, but they are. Even as we mate and allow for the birth of childeren we do not actually make children alive......so killing seems to be taking what is not ours to take.
Just my opinion.........I'll go get my flameproof suit on
I disagree...to take a human life is to relinquish your own humanity. Along with the rights and freedoms that go with it.

That statement is far too reasonable.
The thought of the death penalty upsets many people and hurts feelings, and as usual people care much more for sparing their own feelings than they do about doing the right thing.
Just got to back up and comment.......Pat you are absolutely right!! murder vs manslaughter totally different animals............Still expect everyone to keep their eye on the road (no cell phones), drink responsibly, and for crying out loud, could you please do that at home !!!!!!!!!

Life is not for sissies................hurt feelings? try broken bones and bloodied bodies!!

And that is the reason for the rationalizations. In the case of a person who invades someone's home, binds them, rapes them and then murders them in cold blood, the death penalty is exceedingly appropriate.
TrueBlue1986: Life is full of sissies, look how many oppose the death penalty no matter what the circumstances.
She must have been talking about the murder victims. Murders get a much, much kinder end than their victims get. That's the only part about the death penalty that I think really deserves debate.
gardenhackle: Too bad it's an inside joke. You British blokes have a wicked sense of humor.
There are no inside jokes gh....Keeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep up, it ain't rocket science!!! Blue moon, shoot the moon, bend over and grab you ankles just to mention a few!!

Well, if wasn't an inside joke, then it wouldn't be a "Manchester thing", now, would it? This ain't rocket surgery or brain science or... well, just duh?!
