With the sad passing of one of cinema's finest and most prolific directors (Sidney Lumet), i got to wondering who the CS community regarded as the finest film director either at work today, or from the past. Furtermore, what do you think is the "defining" moment or work of that director?. For the record, I would consider Mr Lumet in amoung my favorite directors of all time. His films such as 12 Angry Men (1957), The Hill (1964), Dog Day Afternoon (1975) and Network (1976) have stood the test of time and are notable for bringing career best performances from there leads. (Henry Fonda, Sean Connery, Al Pacino, Peter Finch). I know there are more excellent directors to choose from, but my sugestions are a "quick pick" based on the time it took to drink a cup of coffee.

I think Orson Welles was decades ahead of his time with Citizen Kane. I love film, but nothing comes close for me. It's a shame that he did very little else. I think Lean deserved a spot in your poll too.
Stanley Kubric and Dino De Laurentiis made a few of my favorite movies. I could never pick just one favorite movie. LOTR series, Harry Potter series, old horror films, 80s fantasy movies, SOME newer horror films, RHPS, lots of UK chick flicks, Period movies, really good comedies. For a while there were too many saccarine romantic comedies out there. Now there are too many computer generated cute talking animal movies.
