US military operations in Libya are on course to cost hundreds of millions of dollars more than the Pentagon estimated, according to figures obtained by the Financial Times. Robert Gates, the outgoing secretary of defence, said last month that the Pentagon expected to spend “somewhere in the ball park of $750m” in the 2011 fiscal year as part of efforts to protect the Libyan people.

The document, entitled the “United States Contribution to Operation Unified Protector’’, adds that US costs are running at a rate of about $2m a day or $60m a month. The memo has been circulating on Capitol Hill since last week. The DoD declined to comment on the increased costs of the operation.
The pace of spending is higher than reported by the DoD comptroller’s office in late March. In a congressional hearing, Pentagon officials said the US had spent about $550m on Libya, at a rate of about $40m a month.
If spending remains at the increased rate until the end of the recently extended Nato authorisation period, the DoD could face an extra bill of about $274m to pay for a combination of air strikes, refuelling operations and intelligence-gathering missions, putting further strain on its budget.
Any extra spending will further strain the DoD’s budget, which is under pressure from cost overruns on procurement programmes and under threat from significant cuts as part of Congressional efforts to address the federal deficit.
Despite continuing to press the White House for additional funding for Libya operations, in his May comments Secretary Gates suggested that “in the case of Libya, unfortunately, we’re fundamentally having to eat that one.”
Any additional costs could also add to pressure on the US to limit its mission in Libya. Last week, the House of Representatives passed a non-binding resolution demanding that President Obama explain the US involvement in Libya, forestalling a more radical measure seeking an end to US involvement.
Although it is working under Nato, the US is by far the largest contributor to operation Unified Protector. As of mid-May it was conducting 70 per cent of reconnaissance missions, over 75 per cent of refuelling flights and 27 per cent of all air sorties.
The US has about 75 aircraft, including drones, involved in the operations and since the end of March has conducted about 2,600 aircraft sorties and about 600 combat sorties. In addition the US military can call on a number of naval assets in the Mediterranean.
Obama Administration Violating Restrictions Against Propaganda
Since 1951, the U.S. Congress has placed restrictions in its annual appropriation bills which state “No part of any appropriation contained in this or any other Act shall be used for publicity or propaganda purposes within the United States not heretofore authorized by the Congress.”
The Congressional Research Service issued a clarification in 2005 which explained “publicity or propaganda is defined by the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) to mean either (1) self-aggrandizement by public officials, (2) purely partisan activity, or (3) covert propaganda.”
And yet look at the taxpayer-funded self-aggrandizement by Barack Obama. The Obama administration publishes a fan blog at blogs.america.gov/obama and uses Google AdWords to advertise the blog and drive traffic to it.
The entire blog is nothing but self-aggrandizement by and for Barack Obama. It’s a cult of personality of a type and level with which the United States has not been previously afflicted. This is the sort of president-worship which we normally expect to see only in backwards totalitarian nations like Zimbabwe or Cuba.
This mindless drivel should not be produced and promoted using taxpayer funds. If Obama’s fan boys wish to create a web shrine to “the one”, they should be forced to do so out of his own quite sizable campaign funds. -- Jamal Washington

Past presidents and the percentage of each president’s cabinet appointees who had previously worked in the private sector. You know a real life business, not a government job? Remember what that is? A private business? A job that actually produces things?
Yep, eight percent! And these are the guys who held a “job summit” last week. Guess that’s why we were promised if that huge spending bill was passed, unemployment would not reach 8%. Let’s see, I think they were celebrating this last week because it was “only” 10%. Now we know why. They’ve all lived their whole lives working for the government. Remember – the government does not produce anything. If the government gives something to someone; that means that it has had to take it away from someone else. All the people in this administration only know how to take things from some people and (after taking their cut) giving the balance to someone else.
We’ve handed our nation over to a bunch of children. Whatever happens to the United States in the next seven years, we can never claim that it was undeserved. These are the idiots we voted for. That makes us, the American people, the real idiots.

I thought it would be lower. So basically, none of his appointees have never really had a job.

When faced with unpleasant news, the Obama administration seems unable to take any course other than to attack the messenger.
Edmunds, one of the most respected analyst firms in the automotive industry, recently became a target for bilious blatherings from the White House when it went public with the information that the “Cash For Clunkers” had cost the American taxpayer $24,000 for every vehicle sold.
The government’s Cash for Clunkers program gave new car buyers rebates of up to $4,500 taxpayer dollars. This cost the American taxpayer $3B dollars and resulted in a net increase 125,000 vehicle sales for the term of the program. The $3B figure does not include interest which will have to be paid on the debt created by the program.
George Pipas, a sales analyst with Ford Motor Company, had this to say about Edmunds analysis: “Edmunds.com’s estimate of the ultimate sales increase generally matches what industry experts had thought.”
Edmunds responded to the White House assault, saying “With all respect to the White House, Edmunds.com thinks that instead of shooting the messenger, government officials should take heart from the core message of the analysis.”
The Cash For Clunkers program was a very effective way for Obama to spend $3B dollars which the U.S. government doesn’t have and I’m sure it had a very positive impact on the Japanese economy. I don’t, however, find a justification for this sort of economic gerrymandering in my reading of the U.S. Constitution.
The Obama administration just canceled plans for the placement of a missile defense system in Poland and the Czech Republic.
Why was this system canceled? It was canceled because the Russians didn’t like it.
The system would have been useful in protecting the U.S. and our allies from the Iranians and the Russians. The Russians don’t feel that America deserves to be able to defend itself, and the Obama administration agrees.
The message to our former allies in central Europe was loud and clear: You are on your own against the Russians.
Jon Kyl, the Senate Minority Whip, stated:
“The decision announced today by the administration is dangerous and short-sighted. Not only does this decision leave America vulnerable to the growing Iranian long-range missile threat, it also turns back the clock to the days of the Cold War, when Eastern Europe was considered the domain of Russia. This will be a bitter disappointment, indeed, even a warning to the people of Eastern Europe.”
Obama’s decision to not defend America is a gross dereliction of the duties he swore as President.
After decades of progress pushing back against Russian aggression in the region, the Obama administration has unilaterally surrendered to Russian demands.
Ask yourself this: Why would the Russians want the U.S. and her allies to be defenseless? The answer is obvious — and unpleasant.
And what did the Russians give us in return? Nothing. Obama has publicly admitted that the U.S. received nothing from the Russians in return for lowering our national defenses and abandoning our allies.
If Obama is telling the truth and the U.S. truly received no benefit from abandoning our allies and bending knee to our enemies, I wonder then, what Obama received personally from the Russians. No one gives away something this valuable for nothing. If the people of the United States received nothing for this, you can be certain that someone did. This is very reminiscent of Bill Clinton’s trading American missile technology to the Communist Chinese in return for cash contributions to the Democratic Party.
