AJ1976: Like yours my country is subject to a heavy influx of "refugees" - they are really mainly economic migrants but we will keep using the word for practical reasons.

Here too they are given some free services and assistance and here too the locals have turned pretty hostile towards the outsiders.

Truth be told
1. Their impact on the economy and the job market is actually positive as they are taking jobs that we would not want to perform anyway (menial and low paid labour in the main) and the availability of such a labour pool enables business to keep its overheads low and invest more in research and business development thus often generating more high level jobs for the locals to take up.
2. The actual extent of their upkeep is a bare fraction of what our politicians waste away on nonsensical matters anyway.
3. Most nations have been economic migrants themselves at some point in their existence. We Maltese definitely have and practically all the settlers in Australia were ex convicts or economic migrants from all over the place. Is it not hypocritical now on our part to deny the same rights to others when we were so quick to demand them for ourselves in the past?

We all need to take a few steps back and consider our obligations to the human race and the legacy we are leaving behind by which posterity will judge us.
thumbs up

TallPete: Just for clarifiction is this poll about refugees, migrant workers or illegal immigrants?

A true refugee haveshould every right to be allowed into the first safe country they cross into and seek assylum. I do not gree that a refugee should travel half way around the world however to choose a specific country to claim assylum in as that is making a mockery of the system.

Migrant workers who succesfully apply to enter a country should be allowed in to work and help contribute to that countrys state by paying taxes etc.

Illegal immigrants should be returned to there home countrys without any right to appeal in my opinion as these are the ones who do not contribute and are commiting a crime which the tax payers are left facing the bill for.
thumbs up

Ladefoss23: Americ became America by the refugees and foreigners..

without the german scentist verner fon brown, NASA would be a peanuts production plants..

but they killed him after draining him off his knowledge

Wernher von Braun - 1912 to 1977....

Wernher von Braun was a German scientist who "helped" build massive rockets that sent American astronauts to the moon after WWII.....He left NASA in 1972 and went to work in the private sector...

A diagnoses of "kidney cancer forced his retirement in in 1977...HE DIED SIX MONTHS LATER OF PANCREATIC CANCER........

P.S.
Wernher von Braun became a naturalized US citizen in 1955........

Most refugees I met had a difficult life, some waiting for years in refugee camps hoping for a better life in a new country.

demonfairy: Say i went to Germany, nobody their spoke English....should i expect them to learn English just because i moved their,or is it my job to learn German and be able to chat with the people their? hi you..

Wow, how I've dreamed of this...a Demonfairy and Jac sandwich. banana cheering dancing banana

Now then. All I was saying, I would have both you gracious and lovely ladies know, is that it is notoriously difficult to define what is "English" and what is not, let alone defining what level of "proficiency" might be acceptable for something like residency or citizenship. The question has been raised in numerous US courts, all of which have quite wisely thrown up their hands and found reasons not to decide.

I find this quite comfy. I could stay here awhile. Y'all comfy? Can I get you anything?

jac379: So what your saying is, English is a bloody difficul' language to learn, for Gawd's bleedin' sake 'ave an 'eart?

A friend of mine obtained British citizenship a couple of years ago and was given a book to learn regarding all things that make us jolly good Brits.

There was a whole section on the subject of Winston Churchill including such obscurities that might as well have been his favourite colour of underpants for on a Tuesday.

As it was, the actual exam was passable with reasonable English language skills (despite English not being the only indigenous language of Britain), but going by the book itself, I am not a worthy of my British passport that I obtained automatically, by being born here of one parent with British citizenship.

Refugees could overwhelm the Resources of a State in no time!
Ask any Official from the Bahamian Ministry Of Health, regarding the Haitian Refugees,of which most are Economic Refugees, and very few in danger of their Lives because of political differences!
The Estimate is,that possibly 25% of the People in the Bahamas are Haitian Refugees, and are largely Undocumented!
Haiti is the poorest Country in the Western Hemisphere, and many of them using the Islands as Jumpoff-Point to reach the US!
The Majority though get stuck in the Islands, and there are a lot of illegal Settlements in the Wooded Areas of nearly every inhabited Island, without Sanitation, and without even the most rudimentary Health-safeguards!
Not blaming the Refugees per see,but their damn Governments that cause such an Exodus!frustrated
Countless of them perish in their rickety Crafts trying to reach a better life!

That is all so, Con, and has been for some time. When in South Florida I worked with a number of those Haitian "economic" refugees. It is true they did not seem like ideal immigrants: they were poor, and unschooled, and most spoke little english, if any. But they were hard-working people, and humble in attitude, and I was pleased to work with them and proud to have them with me on the team. They were good guys.

some are put in motels with pools,
and now they are sueing us,

soylent green is the answer, unless they are refugees,

We had quite a few working for us!
Tried to get most of them documented!
Didn't work out all the Time!
Immigration would periodically round them up,and deport them!
Some were back within a month!grin
But there are some serious Tragedies happening on the High Seas, since the Smugglers are making a fortune, and couldn't care less, whether their Charges arrive at their destination or not!frustrated

jonnoneedsawife: the problem is they come to another country to get away from the rule regulations and to come for freedom

doh Silly them..They obviously aren't aware of our border protection pollicies, I doubt that being indefinitely incarcerated for the crime of legally seeking asylum falls under the banner of "finding freedom"...grin

jonnoneedsawife: trouble making a**hole thier are some good ones to but its always the manorety that ruins it for the good ones

thumbs upAnd as we've seen with recent events the trouble making minority have been indentified and dealt with in accordance with the laws of the land so we can all sleep soundly in the knowledge that those remaining are obviously the "good ones" and if where really lucky we might even get to pat one someday....cheers I bags the one with the bushy beard. thumbs up

jonnoneedsawife: australia may be big but its only the coast erea that can really sustain people as 90% is desert

laugh Have another guess why don't ya,,, From the link below-
The Australian deserts listed below make up about 18% of this continent, but a full 35% of Australia receives so little rainfall, it is classified as desert.
70% of the country is classified as arid or semi-arid, which means it gets less than 500 mm of rain a year.
That makes Australia the driest inhabited continent on Earth. Only Antarctica is drier.
People live in alice springs ffs,not to mention the horde of other outback towns and, where talking about fark all refugees anyhow,so I'm sure theres plenty of space and ample resources on the coast either way..beer

There not allowed out of the camps buddy that’s why I compared it to a jail.
Melb did want to try that. They would be allowed out in the communities with people that wanted to volunteer there place (lots put their hands up). But federal government stopped it before it even started.

And yes I would put my hand up. i currently live with a Italian and Korean foreign students and it been a great learning experience
