In short what you are saying is this. A refugee's death is survival for yourself.

Some say from France, now. Have you heard of that theory? I don't find it tenable myself, but there's supposed to be cultural similiarities between the Beaker People and the Clovis Culture.

Even they were refugees, having crossed from Russia to Alaska ...That is the theory of how America got it's population....

Very few folk can claim not to be a refugee if you go back far enough....So the debate is more about time....When you forefathers moved ....grin cheers

I gusess until they have mapped all the DNA of indigenous People we wouldn't really know!
And even then no one could keep track of it all.

DNA evidence aside, the archaeological evidence against the "Clovis-first" model (the Americas first settled by humans 16-15,000 BCE) has become overwhelming, I think. Monte Verde Site in Chile has reliable dates by multiple methods of 17,500-18,000 years ago. More intriguing, for the Beaker-People-North Atlantic Glacial Crossing-theory, are sites in Pennsylvania and North Carolina, not as firmly dated, but still quite strong.

One possibility is that today's "native Americans" are actually newcomers themselves; that the continents were first reached on or two thousand years earlier, by settlers who did not survive (and left no DNA.) That would make today's "native Americans," in effect, squatters.

Well it was a point that earliest life came from around the Rift Valley.....I am talking of course of the first life found so far...So that means unless you are from that area and lived there all your life and previous generations did the same. Then we are all "refugees".....

I know we in Britain and Ireland are A COMPLETE MIXTURE OF SO MANY....grin cheers

Can't find the article I read on Science Daily, Con; their search engine is pitiful. (Ironic, no?) But the gist was as I said: mounting evidence from multiple sites now indicates people reached the Americas one or two thousand years earlier than previously thought...and those people were not the Clovis Culture folk, presumed ancestors of today's native Americans.

Sorry Pat, missed this post before. As I understand it, the earliest known evidence of life on the planet, dating from the Pre-Cambrian era, some 3.5 billion years ago, was found in Australia. Only an amoeba, yes, but somebody's ancestor.

Which begs the question: How valid is it to argue right of presence by citing ancestry, anyway?

swf1950: Two of my grandparents came here through Ellis Island one from Germany and one from Ireland.

Both had to learn English. My grandfather's Irish was hard to understand and grandmother only knew German. But they can here through the right channels.

So for me go through the right channels or stay out.

I think you're confusing immigrants and refugees. I find it very doubtful that refugees always have the luxury of going through the right channels.

Interesting!
It would be kind of improbable that just one Migration happened, and would account for all the pre-Historic People in the Americas.

AJ1976: Like yours my country is subject to a heavy influx of "refugees" - they are really mainly economic migrants but we will keep using the word for practical reasons.

Here too they are given some free services and assistance and here too the locals have turned pretty hostile towards the outsiders.

Truth be told
1. Their impact on the economy and the job market is actually positive as they are taking jobs that we would not want to perform anyway (menial and low paid labour in the main) and the availability of such a labour pool enables business to keep its overheads low and invest more in research and business development thus often generating more high level jobs for the locals to take up.
2. The actual extent of their upkeep is a bare fraction of what our politicians waste away on nonsensical matters anyway.
3. Most nations have been economic migrants themselves at some point in their existence. We Maltese definitely have and practically all the settlers in Australia were ex convicts or economic migrants from all over the place. Is it not hypocritical now on our part to deny the same rights to others when we were so quick to demand them for ourselves in the past?

We all need to take a few steps back and consider our obligations to the human race and the legacy we are leaving behind by which posterity will judge us.

good on you handshake some people have no empathy or common human decency ..

Just for clarifiction is this poll about refugees, migrant workers or illegal immigrants?

A true refugee haveshould every right to be allowed into the first safe country they cross into and seek assylum. I do not gree that a refugee should travel half way around the world however to choose a specific country to claim assylum in as that is making a mockery of the system.

Migrant workers who succesfully apply to enter a country should be allowed in to work and help contribute to that countrys state by paying taxes etc.

Illegal immigrants should be returned to there home countrys without any right to appeal in my opinion as these are the ones who do not contribute and are commiting a crime which the tax payers are left facing the bill for.
