China's Belt And Road Is Starting To Fulfill Its Own Prophecies

Japanese Infrastructure Deal with Bangladesh May Disrupt “Belt and Road” Initiative

On 29 June, the Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA) and the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh signed a loan agreement to provide official development assistance (ODA) loans of up to 178.225 billion yen (approximately $2.05 billion) to fund six major infrastructure projects. Bangladesh is one of the world’s fastest growing economies, accelerating at an average pace of six per cent per annum due to the development of its garment industries. As such, the country

Beijing's Belt and Road ambitions rekindle Sino-Indian row
Border tensions set off by Chinese road-building in disputed area

Starting in mid-June, both sides have deployed troops on the Doklam plateau -- an ill-defined region in western Bhutan, which relies on India for military support. The tiny mountain kingdom and China signed a series of agreements to maintain peace in the disputed area, but the border issue remains unresolved. Tensions began rising June 16 when China started building a road in Doklam that can be used by military vehicles, according to Bhutan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Netanyahu accidentally reveals Israel has struck Iran-backed fighters in Syria ‘dozens of times’

It has never been a particularly well-kept secret that Israel has conducted clandestine airstrikes in Syrian territory over recent years. But this week, Benjamin Netanyahu seemed to not only admit that these strikes had occurred, but that they had occurred “dozens” of times.

Bill Gates endorses genetically modified mosquitoes to combat malaria

Bill Gates endorsed the use of a powerful and controversial new gene-editing tool to create malaria-resistant mosquitoes in an interview with Bloomberg News today.

The world’s deadliest creature isn’t what you might expect. A 2016 graphic from Bill Gates’ blog outlined the number of deaths per year related to animals. You’ll see the biggest offender: mosquitoes.

Bill Gates Doubles His Bet on Wiping Out Mosquitoes with Gene Editing

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation plans to double the sum it is spending to create a mosquito-killing technology that relies on CRISPR gene editing.

The technique, called a gene drive, is a way to spread traits through wild populations of animals, but its ability to alter nature is drawing opposition from some environmental groups.

Tomatoes, mosquitoes and lasers: bizarre projects receive Gates grants

Can tomatoes be taught to make antiviral drugs for people who eat them? Would zapping your skin with a laser make your vaccination work better? Could malaria-carrying mosquitoes be given a teensy head cold that would prevent them from sniffing out a human snack bar?

These are among 81 projects awarded $100,000 grants today by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in a bid to support innovative unconventional global health research.

Donald Trump had his highly anticipated meeting with Vladimir Putin at the G20 summit in Hamburg, Germany, on Friday, talking to the Russian leader for two hours and 16 minutes, well over their appointed half-hour. Trump pressed Putin on the topic of Russian interference in the U.S. presidential election, and the two also discussed North Korea, according to Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who was in the room during the meeting, along with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. The two leaders were apparently so engrossed in conversation that First Lady Melania Trump attempted to get them to wrap up the conversation but was unsuccessful.

19:42 On the sidelines of the summit, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson confirmed that Presidents Putin and Trump had agreed on details of a truce in conflict-ridden Syria.
"It is our first success," said Tillerson. He added that Putin directly denied any state involvement in the US presidential election, a matter that is the subject of an investigation in Washington.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov added that Trump had "accepted" Putin's assurances.

19:10 "We had a very lengthy conversation," said Putin after emerging from his one-on-one discussion with US counterpart Donald Trump. They discussed Syria, Ukraine and cyber security, Putin told the press. He apologized that the lengthy talk had made him late for his next meeting, with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

18:34 Presidents Trump and Putin finally emerge from their meeting after two and a half hours. According to the Associated Press, the two agreed on a plan for a cease-fire in southwestern Syria.
18:17 DW's Bernd Riegert reports that US President Donald Trump and Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin are still in their closed-door meeting, taking three times longer than expected.

The move onto the plateau by the Chinese military was resisted by the Bhutanese forces who asked the Chinese military to leave the area. When the Chinese troops refused, Indian soldiers in the area intervened and appeared to block the Chinese soldiers from moving forward. In retaliation, the Chinese troops destroyed two Indian military bunkers at the nearby Lalten checkpoint. Since this incident, both Chinese and Indian militaries have sent reinforcements to the area and the face-off between two of the region’s biggest armies continues.

Amidst growing belligerence at border, China outguns India's naval abilities in Indian Ocean Region 1 to 4

The Indian Navy has sighted over a dozen PLA-N warships, submarines and intelligence-gathering vessels in the Indian Ocean in the last few months.

These sightings come as the Indian and Chinese troops are locked in a three-week long standoff at the India-China-Bhutan tri-junction near Sikkim, leading to increasingly belligerent rhetoric between New Delhi and Beijing.

Trump and Putin take center stage as Hamburg's G20 begins
This will be no easy meeting for German Chancellor Merkel. Disagreement on several issues hangs in the air, while the sideline meetings of Trump, Putin and Co. could overshadow the summit itself, Bernd Riegert reports.

On Thursday evening, police broke up a demonstration at which 1,000 members of the "Black Block" - the extreme anarchist end of the anti-capitalist movement - had gathered. According to authorities, around 6,000 protesters were still moving around in groups overnight. At least 76 police officers were injured in the various scuffles.
