Now I know many of you live in a much colder climate than I do, so I am calling on your "expertise" in this matter.
Last night we had a terrible wind & rain storm and a tree branch knocked out a power line, so I had no heat, and for me, it got very cold in my apt. I'm sure for some of you 58 degrees inside would be warm, but for someone from Miami, Fl that's ccccccold.
Obviously my power has since been restored and I have all the heaters turned on full blast to warm this place up quickly.
All the heat sources in the apt. are electric, there is no fireplace. So, should the power go out again, I need to find a SAFE "back-up" heating source, any suggestions???

From a teacher friend : This is America...WAKE UP!!!!!
This is a subject close to my heart. Do you know that we have adult students at the school where I teach who are not US citizens and who get the PELL grant, which is a federal grant (no pay back required) plus other federal grants to go to school? One student from the Dominican Republic told me that she didn't want me to find a job for her after she finished my program, because she was getting housing from our housing department and she was getting PELL grant which paid for her total tuition and books, plus money left over.
She was looking into WAIT which gives students a CREDIT CARD for gas to come to school, and into CARIBE which is a special program for immigrants and it pays for child care and all sorts of needs while they go to school or training. The one student I just mentioned told me she was not going to be a US citizen because she plans to return to the Dominican Republic someday and that she 'loves HER country.' I asked her if she felt guilty taking what the USA is giving her and then not even bothering to become a citizen and she told me that it doesn't bother her, because that is what the money is there for!
I asked the CARIBE administration about their program and if you ARE a US citizen, you don't qualify for their program. And all the while, I am working a full day, my son-in-law works more than 60 hours a week, and everyone in my family works and pays for our education.
Something is wrong here. Right? This is but one more example of our illus trious "tax and spend" Congress that thinks they know better how to spend our money than we do. No wonder our national debt is so high! It has never been more important to know who you are voting for and what their positions are on many issues. If the wrong people get voted into office, we all will pay a steep price in the long run.
I am sorry but after hearing they want to sing the National Anthem in Spanish - enough is enough. Nowhere did they sing it in Italian, Polish, Irish (Celtic), German or any other language because of immigration. It was written by Francis Scott Key and should be sung word for word the way it was written. The news broadcasts even gave the translation -- not even close.
Sorry if this offends anyone but this is MY COUNTRY - IF IT IS YOUR COUNTRY SPEAK UP -- please pass this along. I am not against legal immigration -- just come through like everyone else . Get a sponsor; have a place to lay your head; have a job; pay your taxes, live by the rules AND LEARN THE LANGUAGE as all other immigrants have in the past -- and GOD BLESS AMERICA!
Think about this: If you don't want to forward this for fear of offending someone -- YOU'RE PART OF THE PROBLEM! It is time for True American's to speak up!

I guess my next step would be to see if I qualify for social security disability. I'm thinking of going to one of those social security lawyers first though, I have a couple of friends who went thru the process with s.s.d. & were turned down, then they went to a lawyer & then they got approved.
I just got back from applying for health care thru the state of Tenneessee, I have severe back problems and am going blind because of cataracts, but . . . . because I am an American citizen and not homeless or indigent enough as far as they are concerned I do not qualify. I lost my job because of my back and sight, I do not have insurance of ANY kind, my brother pays my rent, my son pays my utilities & groceries and I don't qualify! ! ! What about all those years I worked and paid into the tax system???? I'm not old enough for social security, gotta wait 2 more years for qualify for early retirement & I think 5 more years for medicare.
While in the meantime illegal immigrants who do not pay into the tax system,and they benefit from it with free health care, welfare, etc. on MONEY I PAID INTO THE SYSTEM! ! ! !
So in other words I helped pay for them, but not myself?????

If we are truly spiritual beings having a human experience, then we can take it that our spiritual self is here to 'experience' as much as we can through the human vehicle - this includes to laugh, to love and to be loved, to give of ourselves, to receive, to experience life through our emotions - yes, even pain, because without pain and hardship we cannot have an understanding of love and happiness.
If we shrink from certain experiences just to feel 'safe', then we are not 'living buy only merely 'existing' and we miss out on the experience of 'being alive' and are not truly living at all. So, if life is an adventure, then let's be bold and go out and actually LIVE! Happy travelling!
