My point is that the 6% are the church goers and that's why you'll never seperate church and state! The politicians rely on them! I agree that this is not good for democracy.
Sorry bud, but that's the perception that the outside world holds of your political system, rightly or wrongly. 94% will vote for one side or the other as they always do so the battle is concentrated on the 6% who seem to be extremists pro life or pro choice and it is these extremists who will dictate future US foreign policy. We in Europe find that very frightening indeed!
Well if God does exist, then death really is no a problem. I always wonder why certain people who proffess to have faith run off to shrines for miracle cures. If they love God so much, why are they so afraid of meeting Him/Her?
Only one country has ever used nuclear weapons and in 2004 some of these were reclassified as conventional so as to be used without presidential approval. That same country has invaded over 50 countries in the last 60 years. Sorry guys but as an outsider I find some of the arguements here very hard to accept.
And I'm keeping an eye on the garden having watched The Secret Life of Plants on Discovery. That ivy on the wall is just waiting to take over and kill us all!
I guess it's just human nature to be on self destruct and I'm amazed that those in power can't see that this can only end badly for all of us, Christian, Jew, Muslim. There will be no winners if we go to war again. There will be no need for oil and no country will be unscathed. I regard myself as a realist incidentally in case anyone thinks I'm a liberal. Far from it.
I wonder why there wasn't the same outrage in the US when Israel contravened UN resolutions and developed nuclear weapons. I wonder too why Saudi Arabia which holds no elections and regularly executes people for civil rights issues in the same way as Iran and our good old friends the Taliban in Afganistan. Are you guys really so naive regarding what all this is about?
I think we're entitled to freedom of speech on a personal level as long as we accept the responsibility that goes with it. If I make a statement about someone, can I back it up? Am I prepared to fight my corner and even if it's true, is the battle worth fighting? I have to be prepared to go on to the end, however long that takes.
Also, we all know examples down the years where individuals had to swim against the tide of public opinion and speak their mind. In the 60s it would have been Martin Luther King and the rights of the black community. In the 70s and 80s, it would have been the gay community. As society changes, those who lead the way stand alone at times till the rest of us catch up,
Then there are the others who use freedom of speach to stir hatred only too often in the name of religeon. I'm not really sure what to do about them. Is it better to let them voice their evil so we know who they are? Or do we suppress them and drive them underground into the shaddows and spend our lives looking over our shoulders for them to come.
One problem I do see,in the U.S. is that if you stand up against the government on sensitive issues, you can be labeled as Un-American and if this pervades into the media, then the information we all receive becomes filtered. Can we have free thought and free speech when we don't have all the facts? That's for another day I suppose.
Just wanted to say hello. I'm a Scotsman living in Ireland and joined the Irish site so I thoght it would e nice to pop in here and say hello to all ye folks back home.
RE: Why is a pastor hosting political candidates??
