Recently watched this movie..I put it up there with The Shawshank Redemption in terms of a story of friendship...that grows...despite the many differences.
I have learned through the years, to always trust my intuition. That gut feeling, that something is off, generally is always right. And, as others have said it is when I over think things..I make the wrong decision.
In your scenario, I would have not gone for coffee in the first place. He had a girlfriend...so, I am sure his girlfriend wouldn’t want him taking a stranger out for a cup of coffee...that is just the way my mind works.
So sorry for your loss. Those days of the loss, the birthdays, and the anniversaries...always bring them to mind...as they are with us every day. You were so blessed to have that kind of love....
