Israeli troops have shot dead a sleeping Palestinian man during a dawn raid in the city of Hebron in the occupied West Bank.

Family members found Suliman al-Qawasmeh, 66, in a pool of blood in the bedroom after soldiers broke into several homes in the city's al-Sheikh neighbourhood on Friday.

The raid came less than 24 hours after six Hamas fighters who had been on hunger strike in Palestinian jails were released on Thursday.

Five of them were from Hebron, and one of them, Wael Bitar, arrested by the Israelis, lived one storey below the victim, residents said.

"I was praying when they entered. I do not know how they opened the door. They put their hand to my mouth and a rifle to my head," al-Qawasmeh's wife told the Reuters news agency.

"I was shocked. They did not allow me to talk. I asked them, 'What did you do?' They asked me to shut up."

Later, the Israeli army issued a statement acknowedging that al-Qawasmeh's killing was unintended. It said he "was present in one of the terrorist's homes".

An Israeli military spokesman told the AFP news agency: "There is no indication that was involved in any terror activity at any stage and therefore we regret the incident."

An immediate investigation has been ordered, with a report expected by next week, according to the Israeli army statement.

SilverBirch: Conrad , I told you twenty times at least, that I don't advocate killing in any form. I KNOW that dialogue can resolve all issues. In a democratic nation as Israel professes to be, the first thing that should be done is to have the settlement issue addressed by international courts.
Let the WORLD decide.
And take the results , to the letter, to the people.!

So , in retrospect, we do agree both sides are firmly entrenched in their own positions. We know Netanyahu holds all the cards and , so far, isn't going to give in on any of the key issues.
So what does that leave us with? Another up-coming slaughter in Gaza. Which WILL test the relationship with Egypt. And I know Netanyahu cares not what Mubarak thinks. He'll vaporized them with the drop of a hat if the need arises. So , without any direction, Israel will continue more of the same. JMO

Yes Hamas fighters seek shelter in building they must know has other people/families living in and yes the IDF WILL just destroy the entire building irreguardless of the "colatterial" deaths. Yes it is a desparate situation. But what is a "fair and Just" solution?
Should Palestinians settle for a "fragmented" security barrier State? Leave behind Jerusalem, their place of worship, forever knowing that they would have to be subjected to the humilating shake=down searchs the IDF will subject them to every time they want to go to their religious ceremonies?
