RE: 1916 Rising - For or Against

Your point about the recruitment tool is quite valid but it is an argument based on pragmatism rather than principle, in short it might have been better to grant them that status for the reason you mention, but the problem I have with 'political status' is that it suggests justification of some sort. Surely you can be political but wrong and unacceptable at the same time?

Political status might also have helped them get support from all over the world on the basis that they had political prisoners, no doubt that was a point considered by the Brits.

RE: 1916 Rising - For or Against

"Explain yourself......please! (that magic word)

They were terrorists, I prefer to remember their victims, who were braver than they were, going about their business under constant threat of attack, and they didn't write poetry about it, they just went about their jobs.

RE: 1916 Rising - For or Against

Let's open up a can of worms...Some people have mentioned (rightly so) the hunger strikers too...

But there is a school of thought...very well founded. That at least 5, possibly 6 hunger strikers where sacrificed to futher SF...

They all got what they deserved, they are not worth a second thought.

RE: People of Ireland

But there was a substantial minority - concentrated in mostly one area - who wanted to maintain their position. Their situation couldn't be ignored, the result was an imperfect partition, but some partition was necessary.

RE: People of Ireland

I would never insult your intelligence! Yes northern nationalists were forced into the northern state, but the alternative was to force one million northern protestants into a state they didn't want, ie a united Ireland!

RE: People of Ireland

The border was not forced, it arose because the people on the island of Ireland could not agree. If there had been no push for independence there would have been no border. The push for independence exposed the fact that there were two peoples on the island of Ireland.

"Outside of Ireland everyone calls you Irish"! not relevant, what does it matter what anyone else calls you? National identity is a matter of belief, if you believe you are Irish you are Irish, if you believe you are British you are British, hence you and your friend across the peace line. Southern protestants now regard themselves as Irish, Northern protestants don't.

A Welshman may regard himself as Welsh, another one may regard himself as British, there is no contradiction, both are right because both are just expressing how they see themselves.

RE: People of Ireland

You and I are not different but the Northern Protestants are, they are British not Irish, republicans can never grasp that, they think that some day the protestants will wake up and be Irish. If you deny them their Britishness it's exactly the same as they denying your Irishness.
The border wasn't forced by the Brits, it arose because there are two peoples on the island.

RE: People of Ireland

"Borders are put in place where big brother......"

That is a meaningless statement. The reason there is a border between Spain and France is because the French and Spanish people are different, not because of some 'Big Brother' whoever or whatever that is.

RE: People of Ireland

We didn't sell them out. There was nothing we could do for them as there was a majority in the North-East loyal to Britain.

Borders are put where allegiences change, there were always going to be two states in Ireland. The only way we let them down was maybe by not insisting on a better deal for them within the Northern state.

RE: People of Ireland

What do you mean by saying "Who would want it"?..What the people who live in the North of Ireland are different??? I'm as Irish as the Irish President (we grew up in the same part of Belfast...)

She wants it..........

As for turning 6 counties into a 'No go area'..That was done with a pen....Google ' Irish Partition ' or something. I not going to teach you histroy.

What the Republican Movement in the North done was since partition was react to a situation that was forced upon them.

Not quite, they more than reacted to the discrimination. They tried to terrorise the protestants into a united Ireland against their will

Northern nationalists act like we in the South owe you something, we don't. A united Ireland would be a good thing overall but the IRA have postponed any chance of it happening for generations. The two communities have to learn to live together before there's any chance of a united Ireland, that has begun but there's a long way to go yet.

RE: Have you ever used any of these chat-up lines?

Me too, unfortunately.

Here's one for the brave: guy goes up to girl, sticks his finger in his mouth and then puts it on her shoulder, as she looks at him in shock he says, "lets get you out of those wet clothes"

RE: Dagwood and Blondie

RE: anyone watching pat shortt on rte1

Agreed, the mad publican/barman of the year is a brilliant persona, a true comic character.

RE: anyone watching pat shortt on rte1

I thought it was good, no accounting for taste I suppose!

RE: People of Ireland

Couldn't agree more. I just thought it a bit inappropriate to use a dating site forum to try to promote one political party, that's the only reason I contributed.

It is Christmas Day, good will to everyone, whatever their politics!

RE: People of Ireland

Well said. Brian Cowen may not be much good but at least he wont' break your kneecaps.

RE: People of Ireland

Join Sinn Fein if you want but if you do then leave your mind at the door as you enter, you won't be needing it.

S.F. take their orders from the Army Council of the IRA, they are always looking for cannon-fodder, both literally and metaphorically.
