Who's to say they weren't damaged in transit, they no doubt were when the were removed from place of origin. And there is still plenty of speculation as to what really happened, probably only Elgin knows, and we aren't going to find out from him, so it's unfair for anyone to say they were stolen.....it could even be argued that without him "securing" them, they would be dust on the floor by now.
Greece right now are not in a postion to purchse the marbles (which is not a dig at Greece's financial problems) at the moment and maybe compensation will need to be paid for their purchase, restoration and up-keep. The British Museum has handed Artifacts back before so we'll have to wait and see what the outcome will be.
Someone has just mentioned to me that the British Museum purchased the Marbles, this is true, however they purchased then from Elgin and not from Greece. This was done because of the contreversy surrounding the taking of them in the first place. However, it is also understood Elgins reason for taking them was because he saw that other marbles had been destroyed for the lime inside. Therefor he thought the best way to keep them safe was to remove them. He did, its noted, make an agreement with officials prior to taking them.
Something to note, if returning them would cause them damage then I feel the safest place for them is where they lay.
Excuse me Vanessa, he has a thread and post history that can be easily viewed, correct?
As for slander and reputation, it never stopped him a few weeks ago, did it........where was your post then about slander and reputation! I'll take myself out of this thread with respect to Chris and his posting of this thread
Chris, personally I don't care if they go back to Greece, what I do care about is that they are safely held so they can be viewed by all nations as they are World History aswell as Greek and now British History. Who ever holds it has a duty of care, as for all Historic Artifacts.
If you are going to judge a man, then no wonder you have difficulty finding a good one. They will keep away from you. And why should anyone prove themselves to you?
I'll accept you may have just chosen poor words to describe things, though perhaps you have chosen exactly what you mean.
People can be too quick to judge, happy to listen to other peoples gossip, not trust or give someone the benefit of doubt......
No one is perfect, you will find fault in anyone if you look hard enough.......
The times I've been close to death, and there's been a few, it never entered my mind, I was to preoccupied with the situation. However I do try as I walk through life to be a nice person, good person. I wont deliberately walk over someone to advance, I will pick someone up, I will go that extra mile. If someone remembers me for that, I'll be smiling down when I'm gone, ooopss or smiling up!
