There were conflicting issues before Elgin took the marbles. He was lucky they survived being blown up. There wasn't a great deal left when he was there, nothing like the building that was second built, bearing in mind it wasn't the first building built on the site. Nor as people think, a religious monument.

You have next to no chance of getting them back as it would set a precedent that all museums around the World would need to follow, including Greece!! No Country wants their museums barren.
