These forums give insights into a person's character, stances, etc.

You write that people are not what they portray online.
I haven't found that to be the case at all.
In fact, I get a better feel for a person when I observe them online.
It cuts to the nitty gritty quicker then occasional meeting.
Having said that, if there is an initial interest in meeting someone, I don't want to wait too long before meeting.
Expectations and ideals can be formed, and if that connection is simply not there, it is no fun when that other person feels differently.
