PIN CITY

The centre of the universe
The ONLY thing that's real
Any act, it doesn't matter
Just make that cocaine deal!

The last high is still receding
It wasn't quite enough
The next one may achieve it.
Need more and better stuff.

That pinnacle of pleasure
Sometimes it seems so close
No matter which vein takes the needle
The best you get is almost!

The ecstasy they're seeking
That satisfying SPECIAL high
It can't be had with junk or coke.
They may feel it as they die.

NEWS

Do You favor gun control?
You say the answer's "Yes".
Should we also control other things?
VD, crime and needless death?

Eight thousand babies starve to death each day
That seldom makes the "News".
Who decides what is important?
Who chose the World Trade Centre few?

Those three MILLION kids that die each year
Is it really from lack of food?
Does Mother Earth hold back on them,
Or doesn't sharing suit our mood?

"They" said what REALLY mattered
Was that some woman drowned her kids,
And a football player's trial
May have involved some complex fibs!

Big Brother's doing something
Going to control the guns.
Starving kids don't have the vote
Their deaths aren't important ones.

A billion for the budget
To count the legal guns.
Can't feed those kids, let 'em die
We're running low on funds.

What "NEWS" is this you give us?
You control when we care?
If You say it's "NEWS" we weep and FEEL
When you don't, we're "Unaware".

CHOICE

They say they're there to help me.
And give emotional support.
If they take their own tests
Are they sure THEY won't fall short?

Many reasons I've been offered
For being such a mess.
Parents, drugs, alcohol
Or all of them, they guess.

At first it seemed real easy
Just pick the right catch phrase
From ones like, "Hey, shit happens"
To, "Wait for better days".

Now I'm fed up, I've had my fill
Of this abdication crap.
If I am a mess, the buck stops here.
I've got to take the rap.

This day is MINE, I can choose
To do the best that I can do.
The choice is mine, and the results.
I own them, me, not you!

"GOOD PARENT"

You say you're a good parent
Though your daughter's on the street.
You paid for things, a roof and clothes
She never lacked for stuff to eat.

You ask, "How can she do this?"
To YOU , when you've given so much!
It's just not FAIR, ungrateful kid
Always cringing at your touch.

Of course you've had to beat her
Isn't that how all kids learn?
There wasn't time to talk to her
All that money you could earn!

She may be doing drugs you've heard
Where'd she learn that way to think?
Anyway you have to go
You're upset and NEED a drink.

There wasn't time to hug her
Or listen to her fears
When you did, she got a smack
She knew you can't stand tears!

It just doesn't seem to matter
How hard you work and try
Bad things still happen TO YOU
Now there's good cause to cry!

The Program

The bank has a computer.
The credit union too.
The government has a lot
Business has a slew.

The outside is not important
It's only what we see.
The value's on the inside
As it is with you and me.

To program a computer
Is an important task
It takes a skilled professional
No amateur is asked!

Computers have a VALUE
One we can weigh in cash.
When we pick THEIR programs
We choose quality, not trash.

Human beings are programmed too
The process starts pre birth.
What programming skills do we possess?
What is a child worth?

We may be smug as we relate
How we TOLD them to be.
Reality is, they listen last,
First of all they SEE.

Some of us don't KNOW ourselves.
From our fears and flaws we hide.
Our real program is based on truth
And our babies SEE INSIDE!

Perfectly Acceptable Profit

Your nose says the air smells rotten.
THEY say your nose is lyin'
That pollution is acceptable
And the profits are just fine!

Man had a world that was perfect
Pure air and water too!
Perfect showed no PROFIT,
What was a guy to do?

Man created money
And the rules of the money game.
Respect to those that have it,
Those that don't are left with shame.

"Perfect" is just a buzz word
For those not in the know.
The word NOW is "acceptable"
Perfect is lying low.

If man took all the money
That there has ever been
Could he repair the mess out there?
Turn the brown back into green?

How many "parts per million"
Are we willing to abide?
Who will worship profit
When everything has died?

The Pro

She gave him what he needed
He probably gave her fifty bucks
She was no sniveling whiner
No proponent of "Life Sucks".

They achieved a bond together
Were joined at more than crotch
Neither one departed
Feeling they'd carved another notch.

Tears glistened as she told him
"No reflection on your charm
I care. I hate to leave you
But I need sompin' in my arm."

The street has a hidden darkness
That not everyone can see.
He knew he couldn't "save" her
And what will be will be.

Right

You prefer to do things one way,
My way is not the same.
Is there always Judge and jury
To hold one of us to blame?

If I prefer the darkness
While You prefer the light
Does one of us have to be wrong?
While the other one is RIGHT?

Some of us speak strongly
As we expound our point of view
Are we always certain of our ground?
Or are we seeking help from you?

"Right" is a subjective word!
Now is that statement true?
It's my opinion at this time
It will just have to do.

Politics and hockey stats
Our morals and our faith
We fight hard that all agree
Is being "wrong" such a disgrace?

Who can we turn to with our doubts?
The man with the loudest voice?
Is my way "wrong" or different?
To ask God to guide my choice?

LOVE

What is love?
A verb or a noun?
Do You give it or take it?
Can You find it downtown?

Those made up street people
Hard bodies, eyes mean
What is it they're selling?
Is love part of the scene?

When You say that You love me
Does it imply a cost?
A one sided contract
You won and I lost?

Does it need to be sinister
A lien on body and soul,
You say that You love me
And expect full control?

To me it's quite simple
The feeling's there or it's not
If "I care" is not enough
Tough, that's all that I've got.

About this poem:
Wrote it in December of 1992 while I was recovering from a fractured skull received when I was mugged, waitin' for my Girl....
Seemed to be accurate at the time. It took a few months to dilute the bitterness....
