They are too upmarket around Hindmarsh Square nowadays...East End of Adelaide is a trendy nightlife area.

Yes, swish looking, but it's actually used by many youngsters also for eg their 21st, where they seek a bit more style. My son and his friends have gone there regularly enough, so it's not the kind of swish that is pretentious and exclusive. Just really nice surroundings.
My opinion is that we should avoid the general pub setting for a Saturday night, cos frankly, it will be absolutely mayhem to hear yourself talk. Given it will be the first time that most of us will meet, it would be nuts not to be able to hear the pearls of wisdom we will no doubt espouse...for the first 5 minutes at least!!!

Elephant & Castle is pretty casual so is the Alma
Not heard of them Steve.. where are they?? I totally agree with V8... we need somewhere that is relatively quiet early in the peice.. or we just meet in the afternoon, but dear Lord.. they would be all useless by dinner time!
Why dont you just lock n load the richmond then it sounds good to kick off If you set a starting point the mob will just pour outta one door & into the next ....perhaps i should have said flow

venere08: I hear ya, kizzy. The Hotel Richmond isn't the Ritz, trust me.
But we really aren't going to be able to hear each other at the usual pub. It is a bit of a conundrum.
I included the Stag, and a couple of other places as examples of central pubs, and MBR was the only one to comment which was to make it bigger than Ben Bloody Hur!!! But he didn't say what he thought of such a venue! Ya can't farrrking win!
As I said, keep a note, that these places are extremely noisy.
My only issue with helping is that I am acting from old memories and I have not been on the piss in Adelaide for over 20 years.. and I only have vague recollections of most of the places... so therefore I am probably not helping!
I think I remember the Stag?? its on East Tce?? there have to be a thousand places.. maybe you and Steve need to do a bit of a Recce/Pub Crawl and just find somewhere that meets our needs or we all just decide to meet on the steps of the Parliament house and crash the first place we see! mmm Govt house will do!

Well, dunno about a pub crawl, but don't worry, we will find somewhere where we can hear each other for the first few minutes, where we can swear and then say yer new to Adealide and just trying to fit in...
Otherwise, it's the banks of the Torrens, or Tent City in Victoria Square!!!

venere08: I'm sure the term city of churches was originally coined by Italians!
When I was growing up, I often heard my parents' male friends as saying they had gone to 'Church', and we all knew what they meant...the PUB'!!!
It was actually a Sydney journalist in around 1900 wrote an article for a Sydney newspaper on Adelaide & he coined the phrase city of churches, due to at that stage in time there being 10 churches surrounding Victoria Square precint.
After that it stuck and was used from then on as a reference to Adelaide, also because at that stage in time the Weslyan methodist church ( now uniting) was very influential in business circles not only in Adelaide & surrounding villages, but at the Wallaroo & Moonta Mines which was the largest employer in the state at that time ( not just with mining, but related industries)

Elephant & Castle is on West Terrace
Alma Hotel is in Maylands ( approx 5 minutes out of Adelaide), owned by Simon Goodwin & Mark Riccutio
Yes, The Stag is on the cnr East Tce and Rundle Street, that area coined as The East End. It really buzzes every night, especially Saturday night. The bRichmond is on the other end, on Rundle Mall, and people keep go off to Rundle Street, paces down, after, or wherever.
Anyhoo, MBR, is that you wearing your cutie pie sailor suit?????

Sorry ven Im waffling on now
Nah, Steve. I wasn't serious about the term being coined by Italians!
We probably should call it the City of Parks, or these days, well and truly, "The City of Festivals"!!!
