I am not too keen on long distance relationships. 1-2 hours is plenty. Having said that, the fella I am dating is living in Dublin, but he enjoys getting out of there at the weekend, so it is working ok so far.
Most, if not all, Christian holy days were pagan festive days originally. They just took them over.
As for snakes. The tradition is that it was St. Patrick rid Ireland of snakes, but the truth is, they never crosses over before the landbridge was covered by water, so they were never there to be got rid of.
It is simply because we have exported so many people all over the world, and they were so homesick that they celebrated the national saint's day. It was called 'Drowning the Shamrock'
Many of the Irish in New York/Boston etc., became involved in the police force and fire service and that led to the big parades.
This then became fashionable not only in other parts of the world, but in Ireland itself which got a renewed sense of national identity, and resurrected the dying parades and celebrations, and now produce top-class family entertainment for the duration of the holiday.
I guess being part of an established religion has always had a bit to do with the social side? Being part of a collective/group of fellow followers is a major part of it.
