Canadian winters are harsh but summertime lots of mosquitoes if you like hiking or fishing...camp fires work...but you need tinder and other brush to create smoke...that drives them away...I also find that certain lotions with scents repel as well...but I do carry deet as well...but rather use non toxic products...
