An Intelligent Cause of the Universe(God)

One of the most important scientific discoveries in modern time is the Anthropic Principal. According to this principal from the very inception of the universe it was fine-tuned or tweaked for the eventual emergence of human life. There are over one hundred factors that must be in perfect balance in order for life to exist. These include that:

1) 21% of oxygen in the air is just right for life(more and we would burn up and less we would sufficate).

2) The sun is just the right distance from the earth(closer and we would burn up and farther we would freeze).

3) The tilt of the earth is just right for life(otherwise it would get too cold at night and too hot in the day).

4) The gravitational force is just right to make movement possible(or else we would fly off into space).

5) The position of Jupiter is just right to protect the earth from cosmic bodies destroying us.

6) The nucular force is just right to hold atoms together.

Over 100 of these factors make human life possible.

Agnostic Astronomer Robert Jastrow summed up the situation well when he wrote: "The anthropic principle is the most interesting next to the proof of the creation, and even more interesting because it seems to say that science itself has proven,as a hard fact, that this universe was made, was designed, for man to live in. It is a very theistic result."

Why is it a theistic result? Because it points to a theistic God beyond the whole universe who planned the emergence of human life before the universe began and tweaked it just right from the very beginning to make it possible. In other words...

Advance planning is a sign of an intelligent cause.

The whole universe shows evidence of advance planning.

Therefore, the whole universe was planned by an Intelligent Cause(God).

The heavens declare the glory of God;the skies proclaim the work of his hands.

Day after day they pour forth speech;night after night they display knowledge.

There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard.

Their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world (Psalms 19:1-4).

A New Years Invintation to Trust in Christ

What better way to start off the New Year, than to be completely forgiven of your sins and receive the gift of eternal life!

May I ask you a question?

Has anyone ever taken a Bible and shown you how you can know for sure that you're going to heaven?

The Bible contains both bad news and good news.

The bad news is something about You.

The good news is something about God.

Let's look at the bad news first...

Bad News 1

We are sinners.

Romans 3:23 says,"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."

"Sinned"means that we have missed the mark. When we lie, hate, lust,or gossip,we have missed the standard God has set.

Suppose you and I were each to throw a rock and try to hit the North Pole. You might throw farther than I,but neither of us would hit it.

When the Bible says "All have sinned and fall short,"it means that we have all come short of God's standard of perfection.

In thoughts, words, and deeds,we have not been perfect.

But the bad news gets worse...

Bad News 2

The penalty for sin is death.

Romans 6:23 says,"For the wages of sin is death."

Suppose you worked for me and I paid you $50. That $50 was your wages. That's what you earned.

The Bible says by sinning we have earned death. That means we deserve to die and be separated from God forever.

Since there was no way we could come to God,the Bible says that God came to us!

Good News 1

Christ died for you.

Romans 5:8 says,"But God demonstrates His own love toward us,in that while we were stll sinners,Christ died for us."

Suppose you are in a hospital dying of cancer. I come to you and say,"let's take the cancer cells from your body and put them into my body."

If that were possible,

What would happen to me?

What would happen to you?

I would die and you would live. I would die in your place.

The Bible says Christ took the penalty that we deserved for sin, placed it upon Himself, and died in our place. Three days later Christ came back to life to prove that sin and death had been conquered and that His claims to be God were true.

Just as the bad news got worse, the good news gets better!

Good News 2

You can be saved through faith in Christ.

Ephesions 2:8-9 says,"For by grace(undeserved favor)you have been saved(delivered from sin's penalty)through faith,and that not of yourselves;it is the gift of God,not of works,lest anyone should boast."

Faith means trust.

Q. What must you trust Christ for?

A. You must depend on Him alone to forgive you and to give you eternal life.

Just as you trust a chair to hold you through no effort of your own,so you must trust Jesus Christ to get you to heaven through no effort of your own.

But you may say,

"I'm religious."

"I go to church."

"I'm a good person."

"I help the poor."

"I don't do anything that's really bad."

These are all good, but good living, going to church, helping the poor,or any other good thing you might do cannot get you to heaven. You must trust in Jesus Christ alone, and God will give you eternal life as a gift.

Is there anything keeping you from trusting in Christ right now?

Think carefully. There is nothing more important than your need to trust Christ. Would you like to tell God you are trusting Jesus Christ as your Savior? If you would, why not pray right now and tell God you are trusting His Son?

Remember! It is not a prayer that saves you,it is trusting Jesus Christ that saves you. Prayer is simply how you tell God what you are doing. Let this prayer be a simple expression of the faith that's in your heart:

Dear God,I know I'm a sinner. I know my sin deserves to be punished. I believe Christ died for me and rose from the grave. I trust Jesus Christ alone as my Savior. Thank you for the forgiveness and everlasting life I now have. In Jesus name, amen.

The New Heaven and Earth

As we think back to the scene in the Garden of Eden in which Adam and Eve sinned against God,we remember that God placed a curse upon the earth(Genesis 3:17-18). Hence, before the eternal kingdom can be made manifest,God must deal with this cursed earth. Indeed, the earth-along with the first and second heavens(the earth's atmosphere and the stellar universe)-must be renewed. The old must make room for the new.

The Scriptures often speak of the passing of the old heaven and earth. Psalms 102:26,for example, says this about the earth and the stellar universe: "They will perish, but you (O God) remain; they will all wear out like a garment. Like clothing you will change them and they will be discarded."

In Isaiah 51:6 we read,"lift up your eyes to the heavens, look at the earth beneath;the heavens will vanish like smoke, the earth will wear out like a garment...But my salvation will last forever,my righteousness will never fail." This reminds us of Jesus' words in Matthew 24:35: "Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away." Perhaps the most extended section of Scripture dealing with the passing of the old heaven and earth is 2 Peter 3:7-13:

The present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men...The heavens will disappear with a roar;the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bear. Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed his coming. The day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of the righteousness.

In Isaiah 65:17 God spoke prophetically,"Behold,I will create new heavens and new earth. The former things will not be remembered, nor will they come to mind." In the book of Revelation we read,"Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea...He who was seated on the throne said,"I am making everything new!"

Bible scholars tell us that the Greek word used to designate the newness of the cosmos is the word,"kainos,"which refers to a newness in nature or quality. So the phrase "new heaven and new earth" refers not to a new cosmos that is totally other than the present cosmos. Rather, the new cosmos, will stand in continuity with the present cosmos, but it will be utterly renewed and renovated.

Everything will be new in the eternal state. Everything will be according to God's own glorious nature. The new heavens and the new earth will be brought into blessed conformity with all that God is-in a state of fixed bliss and absolute perfection.

Scripture also seems to indicate that there will be geological changes in the new earth, for there will be no more sea(Revelation 21:1). At the present about three-quarters of the earth's surface is covered with water and it is therefore uninhabitable. On the new earth,we will have immensely increased land surface because of the disappearance of the oceans. Glorified humanity will inhabit a glorified earth recreated and adapted to eternal conditions.

An incredible truth to ponder is that in the next life heaven and earth will no longer be separate realms,as they are now,but will be merged. Believers will thus continue to be in heaven even while they are on the new earth.

The new earth will be utterly sinless, and hence bathed and suffused in the light and splendor of God,unobscured by evil of any kind or tarnished by evildoers of any description. How good is that?

What will we do in Heaven?

In our present life on earth, there are times when people go hungry and thirsty. There are times when people's needs are not met. But in the eternal state God will abundantly meet each need of the redeemed. Revelation 7:16-17 tells us,"Never again will they hunger;never again will they thirst. The sun will not beat upon them, nor any scorching heat. For the Lamb (Christ) at the center of the throne will be their Shepherd;he will lead them to springs of living water. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes."

The Scriptures indicate that a key feature of heavenly life is rest(Revelation 14:13). No more deadlines to work toward. No more overtime work in order to make ends meet. No more breaking our back. Just rest. Sweet serene rest. And our rest will be especially sweet since it is ultimately a rest in the very presence of God,who meets our every need.

What will we do for eternity in heaven? Will we be sitting on clouds playing harps as some cartoons would lead us to believe? Not by any means! There will be no purposeless inactivity in the eternal state. Scripture portrays believers as being involved in meaningful (yet restful) service throughout eternity. The book of Revelation tells us that in eternity,we will offer worship and praise before the throne of God and Christ. In Rev.7:9-10,for example,we read of a great multitude of believers before God's throne crying out,"Salvation belongs to our God,who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb."Revelation 19:1-6 portrays a great multitude of believers shouting out hallelujahs before God's throne. This is one activity that redeemed human beings and angels will do together.

The worship that takes place in heaven will be ultimately fulfilling. As Pastor Douglas Connelly points out,"Heavenly worship will not be confining or manipulated, but spontaneous and genuine...We will lose ourselves in the sheer joy of expressing with our lips the adoration and love we feel for God in our hearts...You won't find quiet, solemn worship clothed in hushed tones and organ music either. Instead you will hear shouts and loud voices and trumpets."

It also seems that our future service will involve judging angels."Do you not know that we will judge angels?" Paul asks in 1 Corinthians 6:2-3. This is noteworthy because man is presently lower than the angels (Psalms 8). The situation will be reversed in the eternal state. In heaven, angels will be lower than redeemed humanity.

Also in the eternal state,we will be able to grow in knowledge in our heavenly existence. Throughout future ages believers will be shown "the incomparable riches of his grace"(Eph.2:7). Though our capacity for knowledge and our actual intelligence will be greatly increased,we will not be omniscient(all-knowing). Only God is Omniscient. We will always maintain our capacity to learn. This means that we will never get bored in heaven. God is so infinite-with matchless perfections that are beyond us in every way-that we will never come to the end of exploring Him and His marvelous riches.

The Blessing of Heaven for Believers

The Old Testament promises that in the heavenly state, death will be swallowed up forever(Isaiah 25:8). Paul speaks of this same reality as it relates to the future resurrection, when the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immorality, then the saying that is written will come true: 'Death is swallowed up in victory"(1 Corinthians 15:54). Revelation 21:4 tells us that God will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away." What an awesome blessing this is: There will be no more death-no more fatal accidents,no more incurable diseases,no more funeral services,no more final farewells. Death will be gone and done with, never to be faced by those who dwell in heaven. Life in the eternal city will be painless, tearless, and deathless.

We will also have Intimate Fellowship with God and Christ. Can there be anything more sublime and more utterly satisfying for the Christian than to enjoy sheer delight of unbroken fellowship with God,and have immediate access to the divine glory(John 14:3;2 Cor.5:6-8;Philippians 1:23; 1 Thess 4:17)? We shall see him "face to face" in in all his splendor and glory. We will gaze upon His countenance and behold His infinite beauty forever. In the afterlife there will no longer be unbroken fellowship with the Lord, ruined by sin. Instead, there will be continuous fellowship. Spiritual death shall never again cause human beings to lose fellowship with God,because for believers, the sin problem will no longer be existent. When we enter into glory we will no longer have the sin nature within us. Sin will be banished from our being.

To fellowship with God is the essence of heavenly life, the fountain and source of all blessing:" You will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand"(Psalms 16:11). We may be confident that the crowning wonder of experience in the eternal city will be the perpetual and endless exploration of that glorious beauty, majesty, love, holiness, power, joy, and grace which is God Himself.

One of the most glorious aspects of our lives in heaven is that we will be reunited with Christian loved ones. The Christians at Thessalonica were apparently very concerned about their Christian love ones who had died. They expressed their concern to the apostle Paul. So,in 1 Thessalonians 4:13-17,Paul deals with the "dead in Christ" and assures the Thessalonian Christians that they will indeed be a reunion. And yes, believers will recognize their loved ones in the eternal state.

How do we know we will recognize one another? Besides the clear teaching of 1 Thessalonians 4,we are told in 2 Samuel 12:22-23 that David knew he would be reunited with his deceased son in heaven. He had no doubt about recognizing him. As well, when Moses and Elijah(who had long passed from earthly life)appeared to Jesus on the mount of Transfiguration(Matt.17:1-8),they were recognized by all who were present. 1 Corinthians tells us that "now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror;then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part;then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known." The mirrors of the ancients were made of polished metal and were far inferior to the mirrors we have today. The images were dark and indistinct. Similarly, our present knowledge is but a faint reflection of the fullness of knowledge we will have in the afterlife. This being so,we will surely recognize our Christian loved ones in the eternal state.

Is there only one way to God?

Some people seem to think that as long as your sincere in what you believe, then it really doesn't make a difference what you believe,as long as your sincere about it. But can people be sincerely wrong in what they claim to be true? Is truth relative or absolute, when considering your eternal destiny?

The Christmas Incarnation of Jesus

The reason we rejoice at Christmas is that the baby born to Mary and Joseph on that very first Christmas was no ordinary child. As Matthew records, this baby was the ultimate fulfillment of Isaiah's prophecy..."The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son,and they will call him Immanuel-which means,"God with us"(Matthew 1:22-23). The ultimate self revelation of God to human kind,Jesus the Christ was and eternally is God incarnate(literally,"in human flesh").

Although John's Gospel does not include a narrative of the birth and infancy of Jesus, the doctrine of the Incarnation is aptly summed up in John's introduction:

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God,and the Word was God...And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth(1:1-14). The clear testimony of Scripture is that,in the Incarnation,Jesus Christ was fully God and fully man;that is,he existed as the perfect unity in one person of a divine and a human nature.

Paul eloquently expressed the profound truth of the Incarnation in his letter to the Colossians."He is the image of the invisible God,the first born over all creation...For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him,and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven,by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross(Colossians 1:15-19-20).

As the "God-Man",the spotless "Lamb of God"(John 1:29)lived a perfect sinless human life and died a sinner's death to sufficiently atone, once for all,for the sins of humanity(Romans 5:1-21;Hebrews 10:11-18).

Furthermore,it is crucial to point out that though the God-Man is fully human,he is not merely human. Though he took on all the essential properties of human nature,he did not take on that which is non-essential(sinful inclinations). Indeed,as Adam was created without a proclivity toward sin,so the Second Adam(Christ)was untainted by original sin. As with his moral perfections,Jesus'other divine attributes(omniscience, omnipotence, omnipresence, and so forth)were not undermined in the Incarnation.

Finally, while Jesus Christ voluntarily refrained from exercising certain attributes of deity,he did not divest himself of a single attribute(Philipians 2:1-11) With respect to his omniscience(all knowingness),for example, his human nature may have served as a filter limiting his knowledge as a man(Mark 13:32). Nonetheless,Jesus divine omniscience was ever accessible at the will of the Father.

In sum, there is no incoherence in the biblical teaching that Jesus became and will forever remain one person with two distinct natures(God in human flesh). It is this miraculous incarnation of God that you and I along with Christians around the world celebrate this Christmas.

When Love and Justice conflict at the Cross

It is argued by some that it is unfair to punish one person in place of another. After all,the very principal of just punishment is that each person bears his own sin:

The soul who sins is the one who will die. The son will not share the guilt of the father, nor will the father share the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous man will be credited to him,and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against them(Ezek.18:20).

How,then, could justice be served in punishing Christ for our sins?

In reply,it is definitely unjust to punish an unwilling person for another's sin. But Christ was willing to die for us. He died voluntarily: "I lay down my life only to take it up again. No one takes it from me,but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again"(John 10:17-18). Even in ordinary life, some people(like soldiers) are willing to die for others(like their own countrymen). Such a deed is considered not only moral but noble.

Further,Christ is God. The One who demanded the penalty(God)was the One who paid it. The Judge paid the fine for the defendant. Like an earthly judge who takes off his robe, reaches into his wallet, and pays the fine for his accused son, even so God did this for us. In such a case the complaint that it is unjust to pay the fine for another's sins vanishes.

In addition,it is unjust to charge another person for my crime, but it is not unjust for him to voluntarily pay the fine. Once again,a voluntary substitution atonement is the apex of morality:

Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners,Christ died for us.(Romans 5:7-8).

In short,God's justice demands that all sin be punished, but not necessarily that all sinners be punished for their sin.

Finally, there is a priority within morality: Mercy triumphs over justice. Thus, while God's justice demands the punishment of the sinner,in the Cross,His love wins out. When there is an unavoidable conflict between two moral principals, the higher takes precedence over the lower. For example,Jesus taught that when the two unavoidably conflict, our love for God should take precedence over love for our parents(Matthew 10:37). Likewise, even though God's justice demands that all sin be punished,His love compelled Him to provide forgiveness for all sinners who will receive it.

Therefore, while justice as such demands that the guilty pay for their own sins, when there is a conflict with love as such, the latter takes precedence over the former. By way of comparison,a child should always obey his or her parents. However, when this is transcended by a greater duty to obey God(as when a parent commands the child to sin),we are not dealing with obedience to parents as such, when there is a conflict between commands,God is preeminent.

In the substitutionary atonement,we are not dealing only with God's justice but also with a conflict between God's love and justice. In this case, the obligation to what as such would always be wrong(not punish the guilty)is suspended in view of the higher obligation to what is always right(to save the repentant sinner).

The Christian Doctrine of The Trinity

The doctrine of the Trinity cannot be proven by human reason;it is only known because it is revealed by special revelation(in the Bible). However, just because it is beyond reason does not mean that it goes against reason. It is not irrational or contradictory,as many critics believe.

The logic of the Trinity. The philosophical law of non-contradiction informs us that something cannot be both true and false at the same time and in the same sense. This is the fundamental law of all rational thought. And the doctrine of the Trinity does not violate it. This can be shown by stating first of all what the Trinity is not. The Trinity is not the belief that God is three persons and only one person at the same time and in the same sense. That would be a contradiction.

Rather,it is the belief that there are three persons in one nature. This may be a mystery but it is not a contradiction. That is,it may go beyond reason's ability to comprehend completely, but it does not go against reason's ability to apprehend it consistently.

Further, the Trinity is not the belief that there are three natures in one nature or three essenses in one essence. That would be a contradiction. Rather,Christians affirm that there are three persons in one essense. This is not contradictory because it makes a distinction between person and essence. Or,to put it in terms of the law of non-contradiction,while God is one and many at the same time,he is not one and many in the same sense. He is one in the sense of his essense but many in the sense of his persons. So there is no violation of the law of non-contradiction in the doctrine of the Trinity.

A Model of the Trinity. By saying God has one essence and three persons it is meant that he has one "What" and three "Whos." The three Whos(persons) each share the same What(essence). So God is a unity of essence with a plurality of persons. Each person is different, yet they share a common nature. God is one in his substance. The unity is in his essence(What God is),and the plurality is in God's persons(how he relates within himself). This plural of relationships is both internal and external. Within the Trinity each member relates to others in certain ways. These are somewhat similar to human relationships.

The Bibles descriptions of Yahweh as Father and Jesus as Son says something of how the Son relates to the Father. Also, the Father sends the Spirit as a Messenger, and the Spirit is a Witness of the Son(John 14:26). These descriptions help us understand the functions within the unity of the Godhead. Each is fully God,and each has his own work and interrelational theme with the other two. But it is vital to remember that the three share the same essence,so that they unify as one Being.

A Mathematical Illustration. One aspect of the problem can be expressed in mathematical terms. Critics make a point of computing the mathematical impossibilty of beleving there is a Father,Son,and Holy Spirit in one God,without holding that there are three gods. Does not 1+1+1=3? It certainly does if you add them, but Christians insist that the unity of God is more like 1x1x1=1. God is triune, not triplex. His one essense has multiple centers of personhood.

A Geometric Illustation. Perhaps most widely used illustration of the Trinity is the triangle. One triangle has three corners, which are inseparable from, and simultaneous to,one another. In this sense it is a good illustration of the Trinity. Just as there are three corners in one trinagle, even so,there are three persons in one and only one God. Of course, the triangle is finite and God is infinite,so it is not an imperfect illustration...

Determinism/Free Will(Predestination)

If God knows everything, than His knowledge cannot change. If God is really omniscient (all knowing) then everything is predetermined and there is no free will? If God really knows everything, then He knows who's gonna be saved and who's gonna be lost. But if everything He knows is determined, then it's determined who's gonna be saved and who's gonna be lost.

But if it's determined who's gonna be saved and who's gonna be lost, then we're not free? It really doesn't matter what I do(fatalism). Suppose I was one of the lost ones,no matter what I do I'm gonna be lost! Suppose I was one of the saved. no matter what I do I'm gonna be saved. If God knows everything, then the future is determined. And if it's determined then were're not free?

Now let's take a look at this and see if that consequence really follows from it.

Suppose you were standing on the top of a building, and one street was on one side, and another street on another side, and you saw a car coming from one side and another car from the other side, but neither car could see each other and you saw that they were headed for a collision.

Now you foresaw that, and you knew it was going to happen, but you didn't cause it. Your not responsible for the accident just because you knew in advance. You can calculate the speed of one and calculate the speed of the other and knew they were gonna crash! That didn't mean that your responsible for the crash. They freely choose to be driving there at that speed. both of them on their respective roads. Just because God knows the future, doesn't mean He's responsible for all the choices. It simply means that He knows, what we're freely gonna chose to do.
God knows the future, but He does not make all of those choices, that make up the future,He simply knows what we're freely gonna choose.

Or put another way,God knows everything, and knowing it means that it will come to pass. But He can't be wrong about what He knows. If God knew something was going to come to pass and it didn't,then God would be wrong. If He was wrong, then he wouldn't be all knowing. If He's all knowing then it must come to pass.

Let's apply this to Judas who betrayed Christ.

God knew Judas would betray Christ.

That's true. If God knew it,then it must come to pass, because if it doesn't come to pass,God was wrong about what He knew.

So it is also true that not only God knew Judas would betray Christ, but it was "necessary" for Judas to betray Christ. That God knew it would happen, and it did happen, and indeed it must happen, because He knew it would happen.

Now does that mean that Judas wasn't free? Not at all! It means that God knew for sure(He can't be wrong)that Judas would freely betray Christ.

God did not know that Judas would be forced to betray Christ. That would be a contradition. You can't force freedom. You can't say,"I forced you to freely do it." You can't coerce someone to chose what they don't want to do. If there forced to do it,they weren't free,if there free, their not forced to do it.

So God knew that Judas would not be forced to do it,but God knew for sure that Judas would freely do it. Therefore,God can know, and does know what people will freely choose.

Christian apologist Norman Gesiler was onced asked by a young Hindu at a university, regarding predestination. The young Hindu asked...Does God know who's gonna be saved? Yes,replied Gesiler.

The young man said...If God knows I'm not one of the people to be saved, then even if I believed I can't be saved.

Wrong! Replied Gesiler.

God knows weather your gonna believe, and God commands you to believe and if you believe, God knows that your one of the people who would believe. So believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you shall be saved.

You see the sword cuts both ways. If God knows who's gonna believe, and God has offered salvation to everyone then everyone will be saved and God knows that their the ones that are gonna believe...

Should One Believe in Reincarnation?

I am posting this blog in response to a question that was asked of me on the blogs, in regards to my thoughts on reincarnation.

The word reincarnation means"to come again in the flesh." Christians speak of Christ's incarnation, because He came in the flesh(John 1:14; 1 John 4:1-2). Reincarnation means that after death the human soul returns to a body-another body-and lives another life. Of reincarnation's many forms, the most common spring from Hinduism and Buddhism and are based in the inexorable law of karma, which dictates that every action in this life has a reaction or consequence(either in this life or the next).

Three of the most basic rationals given for reincarnation are belief in an immortal soul, psycological evidence of past lives and the need for justice.

A Response to these three Aurguments:

Immortality Does Not Prove Reincarnation

Even if one could demonstrate the soul's immortality(which Plato suggested in his belief in reincarnation) it would not prove reincarnation for two reasons:(1) The soul could survive forever in a disembodied form,or(2) the soul could be reunited with it's body in a permanent immortal resurrection body.

Psychological Evidence For Reincarnation is Without Support

Reincarnation depends on the premise that an individual had highly developed self-consciousness before birth to receive, store, and recall information. By contrast,it is a scientific fact that this ability does not develope until a person is about a year-and-a-half old, which is why we don't remember our first year. That every human being somehow mysteriously "forgets" his/her highly developed consciousness and that most never regain it-unless trained and "enlightened" to do so is highly implausible. The hypothesis is without foundation.

Reincarnation Does Not Solve the Issue of Justice

Rather than solving the problem of unjust suffering, reincarnation simply says that suffering is just after all: The innocent are not really innocent because karma of their past lives is causing suffering in this life. Reincarnationists complain that when a Christian is faced with giving a reason to the grieving mother of a dying infant,he can only say,"I don't know." The law of karma can give her the answer: "Your sweet little angel was a demon in a previous life." This is not a solution to the problem but a subversion of it. Reincarnation doesn't deal with the difficulty but rather dismisses it.

Karma is not a moral prescription. Karma is a system of retribution only;it has no content that tells us what to do. It is enforcement, but not a law itself;it is a penal system without a legislature. It is impersonal, amoral principal of act/consequence relations.

The Humanitarian Argument

Reincarnation is ultimately anti-humanitarian,generating no social compassion. Anyone who helps the millions of poor, crippled, maimed, homeless, and starving people lining Indain streets is working against the law of karma. People suffer to work off their karma debt;if you help them, then they will have to come back again and suffer even more to work off that debt. Therefore, social compassion in India is largly the result of Christian influence.

The Scientific Argument

An individual, unique human life begins at conception, when the twenty-three chromosomes of a male sperm unite with the twenty-three chromosomes of a female ovum and form a forty-six-chromosome human zygote that has life(soul)and body. To claim that this soul(life)existed in a previous body has no scientific basis. The biological evidence points to conception as the point of origin for an individual human being...

What about the Heathen?

Is it fair that people who have never heard about Christ, can be condemned to eternal hell? Now that's the real $64,000 dollar question! First of all we must ask...

Are the Heathen Lost?

All human beings are born in sin(Ps.51:5)and are "by nature the children of wrath"(Eph.2:3),for "just as sin entered the world through one man,and death through sin,and in this way death came to all men, because all have sinned(in Adam)-"(Rom.5:12). Explicitly referring to the heathen(who have only general revelation),Paul declares,Since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities -his eternal power and divine nature-have been clearly seen ,being understood from what has been made,so that men are without excuse"(Rom.1:20).

(Indeed ,when Gentiles, who do not have the law,do by nature things required by the law, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law(of Moses),since they show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts now accusing, now even defending them.) Now this will take place on the day when God will judge men's secrets through Jesus Christ,as my gospel declares(Rom. 2:14-16).

Then summing up his conclusion from the whole section,Paul pronounces that "there is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God"(Rom.3:22-23).

Yes,the heathen are lost apart from Christ.

Can the Heathen be saved Apart From the Work of Christ?

There is no salvation apart from Christ's finished work on the cross. Jesus said,"I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me"(John 14:6). Paul adds,"There is one God and one mediator between God and men,the man Christ Jesus"(1 Tim.2:5)."Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved"(Act:12). In our age there is no way to be saved without believing in Christ(Acts 4:12; Rom.10:9; John 3:16,18,36; 5:24).

Is it Just to Condemn Those Who Have Never Heard the Gospel?

Yes,for at least three reasons.

First, they have received God's general revealation. They know about His "eternal power and divine nature"(Rom.1:21). They are informed that He "made heaven and earth and sea and everything in them"(Acts 14:15). They are aware that God"has not left himself without testimony:He has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven and crops in their seasons"(Acts 14:17).

Second,God has revealed Himself to the unevangelized both in creation and in conscience;if they reject that light,God is not obligated to give them more, since they have turned against the light they already have(Rom.1:18). If man were lost in the darkness of a dense jungle and had just one glimps of light,he should go for it;if he turns his back on it and then is forever lost in the darkness,he has no one but himself to blame. "This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil"(John 3:19).

Third,as we have seen,God will provide the heathen with special revelation sufficient for salvation "if they seek Him through the general revelation"(nature & conscience).

Broadly, this can be done in at least two ways:(1) sending a believer to share the gospel with them or(2) using dreams, visions, and special revelation.

Sending a Missionary

It harminizes with scriptural examples of God sending a preacher to those whom He knows will respond to the gospel;for example,Peter being led to Cornelius(Acts 10). the writer of Hebrews(11:6)tells us that those who seek will find.

Using Visions,Dreams,or Specific Special Revelation

While it is normative(and perhaps even more fruitful)for God to use believers to bring the gospel to the unevangelized,it is possible that He may use other means at His disposal to deliver the message of the gospel to those who would believe if they heard it...
