U.S. Veterans Day - November 11

In UK, France & Belgium it's observed as Remembrance Day (See Jenny's "Flanders Fields" & fedex's "Remembrances Sunday" Blogs).

The German national day of mourning is the secular public holiday of Volkstrauertag, which since 1952 has been observed two Sundays before the first Sunday of Advent; in practice this is the Sunday closest to 16 November. The anniversary of the Armistice itself is not observed in Germany.

Germany's World War I Debt Was So Crushing It Took 92 Years to Pay Off -
It made its last debt payment on October 3, 2010—the 20th anniversary of German reunification.

French Marshal & Supreme Allied Commander during the First World War Ferdinand Foch, on being told of the final conditions of the Paris Peace Conference allegedly observed: ‘This is not a peace treaty, it is an armistice for twenty years’ (Ce n’est pas une paix, c’est un armistice de vingt ans).

I will be in my town, the road closes and we watch and salute todays soldiers and remember those past.

For me the remembrance is for all soldiers lost in wars their government sent them too sad flower
Miclee thank you for this interesting information.
Don't Americans wear the poppies like all Canadians do?
But do so in May? wave wave wave
Jenny .....Yes, we wear them for Memorial Day which is always the end of May. Even though it originated from the first world war I wear it to honor all soldiers who have fallen from the U.S.

Did you know there is one kind of poppy that is illegal to grow in America because the seeds are used in pain killer medicine.

If citizens could grow poppies in their back yard it would put the pharmaceutical business out of business and a lot of people in the U.S. would be stoned. uh oh

It could be eleven degrees on 11/11 just thinking up North. yawn

As mentioned in another comment, in the U.S. the Buddy Poppy is more closely associated with Memorial Day - the last Monday in May.
Herewith is information on the poppy project run by Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).

Those who share sentiments such as expressed in fedex's comment above roll eyes might be interested in this group - Veterans For Peace (VFP) ...

It began in the U.S. in 1985, and has grown to include groups in many countries.

Unlike most veterans' groups, VFP welcomes non-vets as members.

This was before my time, but I have family that lived in the Mississippi Valley at the time.
Every year about this time I'd hear stories of the event - it's almost as if I have actual memories of it.

sorry miclee

vierk all nations who have been to war have a murky past, miclee,s blog is about remembering the dead.

Don't spoil it by your mumbo jumbo
Thanks, Red. Mumbo jumbo---I like that. When I self refer, I might just use it instead of rant. Well, you are of course correct about wars in Nations' histories. Few don't have it. Even no military Costa Rica had guns in the streets a few decades ago. But don't you think German national mindset has been influenced as per my MJ? Perhaps worse, youth there struggles with identity, tough enough without a Third Reich.
Thanks for the links miclee, wave wave
