Childhood

Some things that happen to us in childhood can stay with us for all of our lives. When I was a small boy, I was quite badly bitten by my best friend’s pet tortoise; leaving me, to this day, with a phobia of anything that lives in a shell. Our adult personality and behaviour are, to a significant extent, shaped by things that happen to us in childhood. In some instances of a particularly traumatic event, it seems we somehow block the incident from our conscious memory, but it stays buried deep in our psyche, causing us no end of problems in later life. I often wonder what might have happened to me when I was a child, that I can’t remember. hmmm

You were picked on in school comfort
and your biscuit money stolen often.
That doesn't seem enough to account for it, Celtic.

And thanks for saving me from going to bed feeling neglected. hug

Herbal so sorry to have let you go to sleep feeling neglegted, or rejected, no one should feel that way ever.
Been there myself and it does not feel good I know, so see you in the morning with a big smile okay?
Herby always remember if no one loves you, Jesus does

Thank you, jenny, and let's hope I will still be smiling by tonight. I suppose that rather depends on whether you put me in your book of revelations.

What a nice surprise it was when I looked at my blog, first thing this morning, and saw that I had a reply from you. It just goes to show what can happen when one complains of not getting enough attention. Be careful what you wish for, as they say.

I appreciate your message about Jesus, and hope that he loves me enough to intervene on my behalf, should I find myself in difficulty in the near future.

Some beautiful things can be found in the shell, too:

I can't imagine you in a shell, Daniela. Shells are not for free spirits. joy smile
It is beautiful, Aglaea, but are you sure it doesn't bite? uh oh

I hate water. Can't stand the feeling on my skin. Rarely swim, half the time wear my wellies to walk in the river. Showers annoy me, have to get wet, then take a bath and be wet all over. React to rain like an angry cat. I don't fear water, just hate wet.
Got to thinking about it once. Mom told me about when I was a toddler. My mom, dad and I were down on the river. We on shore, dad out in the water. I wouldn't take no for an answer and kept wanting to run out by dad. He finally told mom, he was on the edge of a break, right there and to let me go.
I ran out and when I got to him, he ordered STOP! I ignored him and kept going, Off the break I went. He let me go completely under, grabbed my hair and yanked me back up.
Mom said when I came up, water running out of my mouth, nose and all, I wasn't crying. I was totally mad. She said I was slapping at the water, yelling, BAD WATER! BAD WATER!
Dad carried me back to shore and said NOW! When I or mom says NO or STOP, you listen!
It was a lesson learned.
I wonder now, if that is not what put it in my mind to hate water?confused dunno very mad
Looking back and seeing how other people grew up, I had a great childhood.

Good parents that were always there for us and we could come to them with everything.

Made me probably too trusting and too open in some occasions, but I learned pretty quickly. Wouldn't wanted it any other way and know how lucky I was.

Childhood is the foundation for a lot of things, one of them to go out and do and see things differently to when we grow up.

Not what you were looking for but just my 2 cents worth Harby. wave
And indeed it has, Daniela. hug
That sounds like a very inconvenient aversion you've got there, Orzzz. As you say, we have to get wet sometimes; baths, showers etc......

As for that incident in the river being the cause, who can say. dunno wine
I wasn't looking for anything in particular, KN, and you gave us much more than 2 cents worth. smile teddybear
Good to see you back Harby, it's mind boggling what else is being posted. uh oh
I daren't read anyone else's blogs KN, I can't afford to get triggered. uh oh
