Gifts not Gift!

Crispy dollar bill Christmas shopping? Well, apples and a bottle of wine perhaps?
Anything else? Ideas? Handshake? A good word? No skull-breaking at Christmas time? Holy wishes - urbi et orbi.......confused

Hi Guadal,

The presents are the least significant thing for me at Christmas. I love the smell of the Christmas tree, of snow, of the Christmas menu, and most of all, that we are all together, my beloved family... wave
Hi Jana,

good time for u!handshake bouquet

Nowadays the meaning of "gift" in german and english is very different. It means poison. But in old german the meaning was as in english: give, handing-over. This meaning still lives in "Mitgift" which means dowry.

Gothic: fragifts means award, hand-over.

Can u be poisoned by presents? Or by being forced to get gifts?
Children may have a compulsory drive to get something as a gift. sigh Just say no? Or do u feel guilty then?
Well, we r children for the rest of the life, somehow.
Guadal, thank you for the interesting linguistic information and for your thoughts! Not only at Christmas, but at other holidays too, I am shocked by the shopping hysteria. Presents/gifts are great but they have turned into something monstrous. People give several salaries for Christmas presents and start the Christmas shopping months earlier... Everybody is stressed with it, the long lists of presents and whether they will be liked or brought back to the shop. Why is all this? Is this the meaning of the holiday? dunno doh
