Dumbing down is a fact. People are trained to be dependent on certain sources of information, assured that information is unprejudiced and covers all angles, and then fed just enough for them to think they know everything.

Governments do rather need everyone to be as stupid as possible, they will then produce bizarre leaders, who will lead bizarre lives and distract everybody, while behind the scenes the real business of the world goes quietly on its way unnoticed by about 6.9 billion of us.

Humans have always been kept in the dark by those who 'know better'

Whether it was by governments or church, ignorance of the masses was always the aim, and most are happy to go along with it.

'Ignorance is bliss' isn't just a saying, it is a way of life.
This is precisely why I moved to southern Mexico. It's pretty much already the stone age here. dancing
@Molly, this..."bliss"/way of life is quite confortable with all kind of toys like the newest gadgets laugh

Yes people are getting dumber, mainly because technology solves most issues. I do seriously believe that somethings should be kept secret by us smart people as they will just cause unnecessary panic.
Well look on the bright side as the population gets dumber the smartest of the dumb will in effect get smarter %wise

doh
@Map, generally people fear about what they do not know, not about what they know...too many secrets, which will be revealed in the last minute one day (accidentaly or because the circumstances) , can create a really disaster because of instant panic, an ireversible chaos, but if they know earlier what's about, they learn how to be prepared in time and react wise and with calm....i think confused but hey, I'm just a dumb dunno for sure when will come the moment, smart people like you will find the best solution wine
As the technology solves most issues, I think I can imagine how couples manage with babys in the future laugh

I think common sense gets less as no one wants to say "no" to their kids and be unpopular, and I think a lot of kids don't need to take responsibility for what they do. A lot of kids these days don't need to work as a lot of us when we were younger - the responsibilities that came with that aren't there anymore and more time for doing nothing.
We're getting a lot smarter. Information is getting easier and easier to obtain. Now if we could only encourage more people to accept it.
@KN, it's sad to admit may be for many, but is the very cruel truth what you said, is the reality of our days sigh

The poet Juvenal said " Panem et circenses " (bread and circuses ) in the Roman Empire (1st century) , when he was satirising the Roman rulers. Roman emperors understood that they could rein in , control , dominate and direct the masses by giving them besides livelihood ("bread " ) some" circus " too, which means giving them fun, to gain in this way such popularity among them, the best way to divert theirs attention from the serious problems of empire and also for get them used to the harsh realities of daily : blood and death. So the solution was to build a gigantic amphitheater, called the Colosseum , whose initiator was Emperor Nero . The famous gladiator fights in ancient Rome , sources of enrichment for the organizers and fun for the plebs were the source of the phrase " bread and circus " .
The method is applicable in our day , but on another level , tech , modern.

Few are those who check information, which selects only what is real , most accept to be stuffed with false information , manipulated by various methods

So,there is nothing new under the sun, mankind has not learned any lessons from his own history.
For the fans (not mine)laugh The origins of alcohol

and of spoiled kids, so called "teeagers"
