“I see absolutely zero possibility of not having a bear hunt, and having an effective bear management plan,” Brodhecker told NJ Advance Media.
“Farmer are seeing more damage this year to their crops than we’ve ever had,” added Brodhecker, a farmer in Sussex County.
The 2020 hunt begins next Monday in parts of Sussex, Morris, Warren, Passaic, Bergen, Hunterdon, Somerset and Mercer counties.
Murphy is a longtime critic of the bear hunt, held annually since 2010, and pledged to end it while running for governor. His executive order in 2018 barred bear hunting in state parks, forests and recreation areas.
“As I have noted in the past, this is a complex issue, and one that my team and Commissioner Catherine McCabe and the Department of Environmental Protection have been looking at carefully in partnership with the New Jersey Fish and Game Council, which actually has the authority over the hunt,” Murphy said.
The Fish and Game Council’s 11 members — two seats are vacant — are appointed by the governor, subject to Senate confirmation.
Suspending the bear hunt, Murphy said, will “allow the Council and Department of Environmental Protection to engage in a thorough and complete review of current scientific data in developing a new black bear policy that promotes public safety and welfare while protecting important wildlife with a focus on non-lethal bear-management techniques.”
“I am grateful to the Fish and Game Council for their commitment to working with the DEP to address this issue and to chart a better way forward,” Murphy said.
Brodhecker was appointed by then-Gov. Chris Christie about nine years ago and said his replacement is awaiting Senate approval.
“I’m all for working on non-lethal methods of bear management, but there’s absolutely no substitute for reducing the population,” Brodhecker said in support of the hunt.
The Fish and Game Council is meeting next week, Brodhecker said.
“I’m sure that’s going to be the topic of discussion,” he said of Murphy’s announcement.
Bear hunting has been a volatile issue in New Jersey, pitting hunters against animal rights activists, and was championed by Christie.
The hunt resumed in New Jersey in 2003 following a moratorium of nearly three decades, instituted after the population neared extinction in the early 1970s.

Gelinas, who lives in New Jersey, was identified Sept. 10 as the operator of the website QMap.pup and its associated mobile apps by the fact-checking site Logically.ai. Since then, the website has shut down and now simply provides links to alternative websites offering information on the QAnon conspiracy.
Gelinas earned over $3,000 a month on a crowd-funded Patreon site dedicated to supporting the QAnon site, which he said helped cover the monthly operating costs.
“As outlined in our Code of Conduct, employees are required to disclose and obtain approvals for outside business activities,” Citigroup said in a statement, declining to comment on Gelinas’s status.
Gelinas didn’t respond to a message seeking comment.
Gelinas is a senior IT group manager, holding the rank of director, according to two people with knowledge of the matter.
QMap.pub received more than 10 million visitors in July according to web analytics company SimilarWeb. The site served as an aggregator of “Q drops,” which are anonymous posts on the website 8kun by someone claiming to have a high-level government security clearance providing inside information.
The QAnon theory posits that President Donald Trump is battling a “deep state” ring of child-sex traffickers. Some adherents of QAnon are running for public office, but some others have committed violent acts or threatened them, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Because 8kun is difficult to navigate and rife with other disturbing content, many people interested in QAnon instead use aggregators that collect and present the Q drops. QMap.pub became the most popular by offering user-friendly features like tags on posts to allow people to search more easily for themes, said Travis View, a researcher who co-hosts the podcast QAnon Anonymous. “It was very effective because it allowed people to go down their own rabbit holes,” he said.

According to a report from MSNBC, the single largest segment of Donald Trump's base — non-college-educated white men — are fleeing the president's camp at an alarming rate and admitting that they have become embarrassed by his actions and his bullying.
In interviews with MSNBC's Liz Plank, many stated that they are remaining in the Republican Party — or called themselves "recovering Republicans' — but added they want nothing to do with the current top of the ticket.
As the report notes, a recent Wall Street Journal/NBC poll shows a dramatic drop in support for the president "among white male voters without college degrees …. from an enormous 35 points to a significant but narrowing 19 points."
According to Nick Stevens, 30, a Texas small-business owner, he is a Republican who is holding his nose and voting for Democratic challenger Joe Biden because he can't handle Trump any longer.
"Unfortunately, I'm voting for Joe Biden," Stevens admitted, with Plank adding," When we talked on the phone, Stevens said he wasn't leaving the party because he's particularly energized by Biden, but rather because he just can't bring himself to support a man like Trump."
Stevens was not the only Republican who expressed sentiments like that.
According to Nick Jesteadt, 30, a former conservative evangelist, "He's made this party untenable," before adding, "There is just no compassion."
"A secondary theme also emerged in many of these conversations. While the men often described themselves as recovering Republicans, many spoke like recovering toxic masculinity addicts. What they despised about Trump was a machismo they once emulated," Plank wrote, before quoting John Chapman, 36, a former Republican who claimed Trump is " a symptom of the toxic masculinity we all grew up idolizing."
"I was drinking the Kool-Aid so much that I named my dog Reagan," Chapman elaborated. "My reaction to Trump's version of masculinity is just realizing how fragile he must be," with Stevens chiming in, "Trump's handling of Covid right now, to a T, describes me two years ago. I had an issue for six years that I refused to go the doctor for, and it was almost fatal, because 'I was too tough for that.'"
Breaking it down, Plank suggested that Trump's base has begun to notice that his promises to them have failed to come true.
"While Trump said he would take care of all white men, he has taken care of only some white men: the ultra-rich ones. As many have lost jobs and housing, Jeff Bezos has more than doubled his wealth since the beginning of the pandemic — a jump helped along by Trump's tax cuts," she explained. "Your average white male voter isn't struggling because a woman or a person of color took his job; he is struggling because a select group of white men are hogging resources and paying taxes at a lower rate than the vast majority of Americans. Blaming immigrants for the stagnation many white men feel is a convenient distraction from the fact that it has been enabled by people like Trump himself."

The reporting comes from a new CNN special scheduled to air Sunday night, "The Insiders: A Warning from Former Trump Officials," in which former senior administration officials -- including former national security adviser John Bolton, former Health and Human Services scientist Rick Bright and former Department of Homeland Security general counsel John Mitnick -- explain why they think the President is unfit for office.
Kelly's sentiments about the President's transactional nature and dishonesty have been shared by other former members of the Trump administration who also appear in the special.
Olivia Troye, a former top adviser to Vice President Mike Pence, has said the President knew about the impact the coronavirus pandemic would have on the US by mid-February, but that "he didn't want to hear it, because his biggest concern was that we were in an election year."
Miles Taylor, a former DHS chief of staff who now serves as a CNN contributor, has asserted Trump essentially calls individuals within the federal government who disagree with him "deep state."
Elizabeth Neumann, another former DHS official, had criticized Trump for not condemning White supremacy after the first presidential debate in September.
"The fact that he continues to not be able to just point-blank say, 'I condemn White supremacy.' It boggles the mind," she told CNN at the time.
Trump did say on Thursday during a town hall on NBC that he condemned White supremacy. "I denounce White supremacy, OK?," Trump told NBC's Savannah Guthrie. "I've denounced White supremacy for years."
The President sometimes is successfully cajoled to condemn White supremacists, but often -- such as in the first presidential debate -- seems reluctant do so, perhaps so as to not alienate any potential votes.
Kelly, who left the White House under contentious circumstances in January 2019, has occasionally voiced criticisms of the Trump administration since leaving his post.
In June, in the wake of George Floyd's killing at the hands of Minneapolis police and Trump's response to the subsequent protests and calls for racial justice, Kelly said he agreed with former Secretary of Defense Gen. Jim Mattis' stark warning that Trump is "the first president in my lifetime who does not try to unite the American people."
