Good Morning Ghost,
Have never been, but have a summer trip planned for there. Am an avid reader of WW2 history and the historical stories of the Holocaust in particular. I would like to go to Oswiecim to see the sites of Auschwitz and Birkenau. I think Warsaw is the biggest city to it. Maybe that could be something you would like to check out?????

You have a wonderful time. Be safe.

Have a good day.

Krakow is supposed to be particularly beautiful; I met a lovely English teacher from Krakow in Warsaw several years ago - she travelled to meet me by train - I think it was about a six hour journey, but she said it was worth the time and effort to see me! blushing

I've been to Poland twice. The last time was last year.
I liked it and found that the people were very friendly. Depending on whether you're familiar with those ex-Iron Curtain countries you may find it a bit backward - the roads are a nightmare away from the main highways for example.
The language will be, I would imagine, totally incomprehensible! It was to me.
From what I've heard, many people in the capital speak English. I was in the West and South and that wasn't the case except for schoolchildren. If you should happen to be driving a car they have a law that says the headlights have to be on 24/7 !!! I fell foul of this and had a little contretemps with the cops in South Poland, Kracow I think it was, who wanted some of my Zlotys.
Auschwitz or Oswiecim is in the south of Poland, quite near Katowice.
I found that being friendly and upfront with the people, which is my attitude anyway, always gets good results. Good luck!

Hi Ghost.

I have spent many a month in Poland. There are loads to see. If you are interested in history ie holocaust then go to Auschwitz its only about 1 hour drive east from Warzawa. In the north is Gdansk (_Danzig) or the holiday resotrt of Sopot, how about a boat trip on the Weichsel or Wistula.

If you are religous, then a trip to Krakow to the chruch of mary magdalena.

Evenings in Warzawa, go to the old town on the market square, loads of restarants and bistros. Super food and cheap.

Hi Ghost,

We have lots of wonderful places which are worth seeing in Poland.
I don't know how long do you intend to stay here...but the best one is Cracow. The most historic town, full of monuments and in the opinion of Poles the capital of Polish culture. It will takes you about two hours to reach it on the fast train from Warsaw's central
station. I recommend to see the Wawel castle there... but I suppose you will have to stay for about two days in Cracow to see as well the city as the castle. Of course Auschwitz is also one of famous
places in Poland and it is a pity that not all the people visiting my country are interested in that place. If you need, feel free to contact me for some more suggestions, I will try to help.
As well I am sure lots of real people you will meet in Poland in a person will offer their friendly help to you. Good luck!!

Yes they are ghost.

I worked in Poland for a year and was based in Warsaw. As others have said, the Old Town is beautiful, and Auschwitz is a must to visit, though be warned, it is a very moving experience.

The best fun I had during my time there was in Poznan, though I can´t tell you too much about the place itself. I was teaching Polish Army Officers, a two week intensive course, and I had to live on the camp!! The Captain met me off the train when I arrived, took my hand and kissed it, then carried my bags to his chauffeur driven car. It was magical! The guys looked after me well. grin

Hi Ghost,

I used to live in Warsaw and now in Krakow, do contact me if you need any particular hints.

Krakow is a must-see (3 hrs by train from Warsaw).
Auschwitz is 1 hr away from Krakow (not Warsaw as someone has suggested) but this is a very moving experience...

A bit of warning though: we still had loads of snow today although this is completely abnormal ... but warm clothes might be quite useful if you are coming soon...

Anwyay, I am happy to help, I have a lot of spare time these days :)
