Speaking in Strasbourg, President Obama characterized the U.S. - Europe relationship as follows:

It's easier to allow "resentments to fester" than "to forge true partnerships," the president said. "So we must be honest with ourselves. In recent years, we've allowed our alliance to drift. I know that there have been honest disagreements over policy. But we also know that there's something more that has crept into our relationship.

"In America, there's a failure to appreciate Europe's leading role in the world. Instead of celebrating your dynamic union and seeking to partner with you to meet common challenges, there have been times where America's showed arrogance and been dismissive, even derisive.

"But in Europe, there is an anti-Americanism that is at once casual but can also be insidious. Instead of recognizing the good that America so often does in the world, there have been times where Europeans choose to blame America for much of what's bad.

Rather spot on, I think, on both counts.

thumbs up To a point, think he's onto something. Nice to stroke your neighbors but don't really think Europe is playing that much of a "leading role" in the world. Would be nice to see a little more co-operations from all concerned about world problems instead of playing the "whats best for MY country game." And I mean ALL countries, not just, but including the U.S.

More then that. Would be nice if they used a little insight and worked for the betterment of ALL people, not just their little corner of the world. Basically, we all want the same thing.

Yes I saw this on the news .
I thought what Mr Obama said had truth and integrity in it.
It ,for me ,summed up the whole situation regarding the relationship between Europe and the USA.
Lord all you have to do is read some of the forums on here to pick up on that .

Hi again JL....nice to see you around here again.....

Have followed most of the press conferences and talks given by president Obama whilst in Europe......

....from the G2 meeting, when in France, and the Nato meeting.....

....and the common denominator was the incredible popular embrace that Obama has achieved within all European countries.......

....beyond any shadow of a doubt......happy to finally see a representative of the American people receiving such respect and backing for a change.....

....previous administrations had unfortunately brought the situation of a very strong anti-American wave these last couple of decades....and not without reason either.

Obama is not only talking sense.....but he has the capability of generating support like no other American Presidency during my lifetime...and so it should be....

Yeah I agree with you JLB.........

I think it has been so easy for people to blame their lot in lives on America, and its policies, when in actuality its not America but, I think one President and his advisors that have caused a lot of resentment. He completely disregarded the rest of the world, while fixed on his self centred policies.

From what I have seen and read of O'Bama he is a lot more inclusive.

Good Thread.......

I am glad to see a president who is finally willing to forge partnerships rather than thumb their nose up at the rest of the world....Peace and alliances...not just military should be the aims of the say...NOT military might....I applaud Obama for going in this direction....hug kiss hug heart beating

Two quotes of his that I like very much:

Americans... still believe in an America where anything's possible - they just don't think their leaders do.

Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.

I think he's right about both of those...everyone sits back waiting for their leaders to perform miracles...YET what do they do to ensure their country is a better one...besides sit back and criticize...the leaders can't make change all on their own...it takes the willingness of the entire country....wave wink thumbs up

jlb When all you have left is your pride...

The president has had an effective strategy especially in these uncertain times. We are a country of many from all parts of the world. We would like nations to know that we value people and ideas.

I have been embarrassed for too long by a leader who had a single voice who though we needed not to show any appreciation to any other country.

Obama has made a lot of speaches, and all seem to have good commen sense comming from them.
Being on CS, has made it so the everyday people from all over can talk and form friendships. I have come to see that we are all in the same boat. and friends that I have talked to across the pond, use to think and the majority do that Americans are arrogent and spoiled. We are when you look at our past poloticians, the tycoons, and such. But the everyday citizen is not. Obama I feel is for the first time representing the American people in the right fassion.
There are a lot of antiAmercan hostillities out there, and Obama has his work cut out for him. But I think so far he has been doing a very good job, with the short time he has been in office. And I do agree that no matter where the problem came from or how it all came about. It is a world problem now and the first day of the rest of our lives. It is time to forget who did what and when, and start working together to get the world back on track.

May I first congratulate you on an excellent OP (Opening Post).

I agree with what Obama has had to say; he has obviously done some homework and realises that there are significant differences both in culture and perceptions on either side of the Atlantic that do go beyond a joke.

Most intelligent Europeans are both happy that the only super power (or only recognised super power) is the USA yet at the same time deeply concerned that there has been only ONE super power.

I think Obama realises that he needs the willing co-operation of allies rather than dictating policy to a bunch of recaltricany kids who need to be bullied into line.

We have common interests and we also have some conflicting interests; I like the way that Obama has been upfront and honest in the knowledge that he cannot solve all his perceived problems by taking a unilateral stance - he is saying that the USA is now a partner in the world and the USA is not just a leader that has no need to really listen and understand the views of other nations and cultures and the individual needs of different countries and their peoples.

I like the way in the news conferences that he spoke directly to Europeans and not just to their leaders.

He is a thoughtful and well-meaning man. He has not yet lost either the goodwill he started off with and has already shown that he can make some decisions that might be perceived as being unpopular (i.e. his stance on Afghanistan and not withdrawing troops from Iraq as early as he might have said in the past might not please the average person who voted for him).

He does not lack credibility.

I hope he succeeds in building hope for the future and allowing Europe and the USA reverse the negative attitudes we have built up (consciously or sub-consciously) over recent years.

'We can change' - and if enough individuals believe things are possible then miracles can happen!

thumbs up
