This has some potential international problems between the US and Iran to it.

A American/Iranian journalist, one Roxana Saberi, 31, was sentenced to 8 years in prison for 'spying'. Here are a few items of note.

There one day trial was held behind closed doors with only her Iranian Attroney present. He will appeal.

Her father says she was there doing research on a book on the Iranian Culture and People.

The Iranian Government says that they have proof of the spying, but doesn't provide it publically.

The DEM Senator from her state is asking the Iranian Gov't for
compassion to be shown.

President Obama administration has been largely quiet on the issue. With one brief statement on the issue so far. While the Iranian government said this should not effect developing US/Iran relationship or talks.

She represented North Datoka in the USA pageant. She is a former beauty queen. She had been in Iran for 6 years as a freelancer. She worked for BBC and National Public Radio in the past.

Iran holds Presidential elections in two months and there are signs that the present hard line Regieme of Pres. A. is weak at the polls against reformers canididates/parties.

Speculation is that hardliners within the Iran legal system are trying to side track the US/Iran talks on nuclear weapons and nuclear programs of Iran.

Thoughts?

A different kind than before, then? Opps I cannot say that...Iran held the American Embassy staff for long time during Carter's administration.....they have already done this.

Sameway I read it too, Jesse

Why ante up with the talks coming? Iran legal system could have delayed the trial for indefinite time....

Time out Rocket.

The woman is Muslim. It is Iran on the topic issue. Defending Iran by any acts of the US is like saying two wrongs make a right. Iran has to stand and be held accountable on this on their own. They arrested the woman, say they have evidence to her guilt, and now convict her. Is that fair due process of justice? Not in my country.

Even the GITMO detainees got more justice here, than she did.
Their military courts were in public view, they were given time to prepare legal defenses, they certianly had more than one days hearings and public opinion played a big role to what has happened to them.

President A is coming us to just saying......to have talks with Iran on nuclear issue, you have to see Iran as a "just country" and negotiate with it as a regional power.

You see justice here?

It was a 'given' that she would be convicted,; it was before it became a play on the public arena, a good opportunity for quiet, back-door negotiations and 'diplamacy' to take place, but now, in /on the very public arena, it has changed somewhat; the alleged 'proof' of the charges will be played out/ given out in private or scenario 2, no private disclosures of proof and publicly, it will be a great opportunity for the govt. of Iran to magnanimously intervene in the case and 'pardon' her, showing the world at large how reasonable they can be; most likely warning privately the US govt. of what it will do. Hence, in the end, everyone wins and the general public will see the Iranians in a favourable light making it a lot easier to publicly engage them by the US govt. A version of 'smoke and mirrors' played out all the time in the world of Diplomacy. Any other scenario would only result in very negative consequences for Iran. It needs good propaganda for good public relations, as does the US govt. to further engage it in any public dialogues. Convoluted simplicity...perhaps...laugh

look I was just stating facts, never said that it was fair or un-fair why is it you wish to turn this into a political debate. This is the first time they have sentenced anyone from our country to prison ,they have held others but have always let them go. It has nothing to do with our country holding anyone from a Muslum country .you are the one being negative here not I. And I am just curius why that is , do you think she should be held just because our country has done this . How does the saying go "Two wrongs do not make a right"......hug

Maybe but try this one.

The Iranian hardliners in legal system have her for a period of time under arrest. They have a problem. Pres. A wants talks with the US. President Obama wants talks with Iran. If they do a long drawn out trial....bad publicity for Iran.

Only President Obama comes the ladies hasty conviction (I wish I could rescue)....well in a very unintended way.

He goes to Europe and South America.....and begins giving the international apologies....."The United States has made mistakes in the past..."

The Iran court picks up that if they do hasty trial and convictions of the woman, people will just assume that she is one of those US mistakes of the past. Honest I don't know if the woman is a spy or not. The CIA did not claim her as one of theirs.

But I do feel President Obama's apology messages placed her into greater legal difficulties. They gave the Iranian court a position and logic to convict with little evidence to show. If they had a lot of evidence and air tight case, Iran would have laid it all there to be seen...

Iranian prisons are not the club med. She is going to do some hard time on this conviction.jmo

I know it is not policy to acknowledge CIA spies when caught.

Many reasons for that policy.

Just a little up date.

Hillary Clinton just gave the US position to the Iranian conviction of Roxama Saberi.

The United State is "deeply disappointed" in her conviction.

Remind me not to get arrested in a foreign country.
