I don't see a problem asking what someone does for a living, it's the sort of topic which crops up when you meet someone in real life, just a means to see if you have had common experiences.

In Cyprus they have a habit of asking your whole life story if you are in the same lift, never mind meting them socially!

just saying, if we put things like this aside and relate to one another as fellow inhabitants here, with respect, regardless of religion, race, looks, career, ect, ect. we may have a chance to find common ground.angel

Tulefel: Well… .... snip.....

The other day I’ve talked about that with an acquaintance (he’s a GP), and he told that he hates to answer this question, because some people immediately start to ask his professional advice. Consider a party, folks in fine clothes, and a lady hitches up her long skirt and shows him her cellulites, never mind other guests, his wife among them… So he prefers to say that he’s unemployed, and people lose their interest… It clears space around him, but they who remain, well… they are interested in him (and he’s indeed a very interesting person to talk to), not in his occupation, income and his place on the social ladder that comes with it.

Sorry for a long post

My brother-in-law is a doctor and he`d always say "Let`s find a private room for you to undress in so I can give you a real professional diagnosis ..... you don`t mind if I take my drink along with me?"

leonjs48: thats a question people ask here in the states as well, i don't care for it. i think most people that do this are trying to find out if you are on their level, career, intellect, ect, ect. i'm sure some don't mean any offense, but i find it offensive when they hear "what you do for a living" they find a reason to cut-off whatever conversation you were having and get away from you.
this has happened to me on several occasions, the crazy thing is, before "they found out what you do" you got along great. and possibly besting them on whatever the topic was, maybe thats why they beat a hasty retreat, imagine that.

Yes, it’s my impression as well: they want to hang a price tag on you, to figure out what you are “worth”, and then decide whether you are an appropriate acquaintance for them.

For me everybody who thinks that he can estimate my value with a single question is certainly an inappropriate acquaintance, and not worth wasting my time on him.

RobertC2: Most people work eight hours most days and have 'recreation' eight hours per day and sleep about eight hours per day........... what you do most days for 50% of your waking life has to be important!

Ok - so I'm a lazy bum and have recreation 20 hours per day and sleep just 4 hours....... wtf?

After I’ve worked my eight hours a given day, talking about my job isn’t a recreation for me, and therefore I won’t tell what I do for a living. If they can’t find any other subject then there’s no point in IM-ing.

Oh, people’s reaction… it is amazing, isn’t it? Especially when they didn’t expect the answer they got.

Asking a whole life story is one thing – they show that they are interested in you. Asking only one question is quite another – they want to know how much you may earn, they show that they are interested in your financial situation only.

high. I have known some people whose only since of self worth comes from their profession. they work long and hard, have very few interests outside their jobs. they retire, looking foreward to a new life and are absolutley misarable becuse they dont know what to do with all of that time. these people are always going to ask you what you do for a living. that would define who you are to them. then your looks. It is kinda superficial stuff. if you were a hit man or an ax murder it might be nice to know. But what the hell, as long as we had fun while I was in one piece, who cares. bruce

No one ever took him seriously! I often wondered how the hell he got to be a doctor in the first place?!

Oh, he would leer when he said that, enough to give any woman the total creeps, and guys too! And he was so fall-down drunk when he was off duty or on holiday...... He was quite an education into the world of medicine. That`s one of the reasons I became a Naturalist and Herbalist!

My standard reply to this type of question is "As little as possible".

I do not do much for a living - it's there anyway, somehow dunno

I have become increasingly involved in joining forces with the good people on this earth, in a troop effort to level unjust life quality and security for other people.

It is a good way to wake up - to know you can make a difference to someone.
