I know that there are some people here who try to do this, not adopted Europeans generally, but those who have adopted US nationality.

I know this because I have taught English to many nationalities, and therefore recognise non native speakers (or writers) immediately, however well they write, and it is often grammatically much better than native speakers incidentally!

Why? Is it because they do not feel fully integrated or accepted?Eastern Europeans in particular seem to do this, however long they have lived in the US, and perhaps it is because they get a hard time on the forums from their adopted countrymen.

Correction professor

Perhaps because they see others openly honest about their roots getting a hard time on the forums.

I hid the fact that I was from Mississippi for many years when I was in the working world. Today I don't give a damn what people think when they know I am from a redneck southern state.

Jokers abound!

I was being serious though. I do know that there are a few members here who choose to deny their roots.....as in nationality John!

rolling on the floor laughing As do most of the women´s here no doubt....perhaps a few of the guys too. laugh

However, it is revealing that those (a few regular posters incidentally) who I know to be non native American, are still afraid to come out of the woodwork.

i am not ashamed of who i am and where my true roots come from and where i was born even though i was born in yugoslavia and have lived in australia since 1971 i tend to miss my country i miss the village i grew up in i miss my fathers parents who are my grandparents and i miss my brother who has lived in osijek all his life i have an aunty who lives in zagreb and when ever i hear my people speak in ther own language in comes the memorys of my country

but what hurts me the most my sister was born hear in australia and she does not want nothing to do with me or my mother or is she willing to admitt that she has croatian parents

she lived only across the road in brisbane from my mother and would ignore my mother she feels she is a pure australian more then a croatian

i know i have not got pure aussie blood in me even though i learnt to speak australian from a young age my family name gives it away

my teachers new straight away my school mates and even when i am hired my employers know straight up that i was born overseas

when i came to australia i wanted to know who the true aussies were we have a lot of aussies from diffrent countrys who have settled in australia at school i was taught that the aborigonal people were not true australians and i sort allowed my self to believe what i was taught until i got to know some aborigonal people

i am not ashamed to say that i am an imigrant who loves loves the country he calls home and our way off life and i can honestly say this i have met some good aussies who see me as an aussie more than an immigrant

my grammer is not that good so cant hide the fact that i am an immigrant

the reason why some people do this is due to where they come from and what they have experianced in ther own countrys

sometimes its hard to fit into a new country when you stand out like a sore thumb whats even hard is trying to learn the language and then having to teach your parents who have spoken ther language all ther life

i see this were certain immigrants who come to australia find it hard to adopt to our way off life

you see this with the muslims and the lebanez and the russians and the chinese but you dont see this with the italians and the greeks they tend to fit in real well also you dont see this with my people but ther are some that wil not give up ther language to where its realy hard to communicate to them

hears my question and i am not going to attack no one why do so many white people hate immigrants what is it that makes you feel uncomfterbal when it comes to immigrants from other countrys settling in your countrys do you realy want us living in your country and adopting to your way off life or do you want us to go back to our countrys we were born in and let you run your countrys the way you see fit

i am not wanting to start an all out war or do i want to de rail the op thread and turn it around my question is genuin though why fear us we are just like you we all have feelings and we hurt when we see another humen being being eiither bullied or left out

i got picked on because i stood out my skin is olive brown not white

Jan1305: I agree entirely. However, it is disconcerting when people deny their roots or do not come out and support their people in the many "bashing" threads.

I am British, but live and work in Spain. I also intend to stay in Spain for the rest of my life, but I will always defend my country of birth if comments are made unfairly.

Actually, when some bash my Country of the USA, sometimes I have to agree with them. I can not defend if I find some remarks true to my beliefs. I don't always agree with some issues and decisions my Country makes but I will never degrade my place or origin.......

I said, in spite of choosing to reside in Spain, I defend my Britsh nationality if unfair comments are made.

That is what you implied in my reading of your post.

However, that is not really the argument, I was simply defending my personal viewpoint, as you did. The original question was about people completely denying/hiding their roots....not accepting nor defending. You and I are not denying our birth place, we make both negative and positive comments.

i am the same when it comes to my country i do have a dual citizenship even though i have lived in australia all my life if something were to happen in my home land i will back my people up 100%

and its the same if australia was to get attacked and our goverment needed guys to deffend our country i would die for this country

sometimes i agree with the acting prime minister and some times i dont does not mean i am a trator

i have talked to sevral immigrants i have gotten to know and they feel the same way as i do

but what i dont like is the way the aborigonals have been denied off ther roots for example in the world war 2 the aborigonal men inlisted in the amry but have not been honored for the sacrifices they have made

only know are they being acknowledged one thing i found hard to accept is how i was able to leave and go visit my country but when it came to the aborigonal people they wer not alowed to travel or even vote ther rights were taken off them

this topic i am seeing can get heated so i hope the op of this thread is able to back what she has said and can accept other peoples views and input into this thread

i hold great respect for people who are not ashamed to admitt who they are and were they came from

in the old parliment house is our countrys history and you can leave wher your family came from

i have been going over this thread and i dont realy care if i get people responding to what i am leaving in this thread

this is not an old issue that is only being discussed in this forum

I may have moved to the States, but my nationality will always be British/Irish. I am proud of those roots, and although I may start to take on a American "twang" in time, as my sister has done after several years of living here, I will never lose my accent of birth and would never want to. I am teased here about certain words I say, or the way I pronounce certain things, but it is all in good faith, and someone the other day specifically wanted me to speak to them just to hear my accent..laugh

In answer to the OP, I dont know why. I can only assume it comes down to trying to be accepted quicker, or easier, or because they are somehow thinking that unless they adopt the accent, they will not be a true "American", or a true native of whatever adopted country they have decided upon.

I am East African by birth and very proud of that, but from British parents and spent my education in the UK, so you could say I have split loyalties, I support Kenya in all sporting activities and the UK when Kenya is not in the same competition.
I also do not understand why some members seem to hide their true origins.
