It seems as the dollar goes down gold and other commodities go up. Quite frankly I'm a bit surprised to see gold where it's at. A month ago I expected to see gold fall off a little but it keeps chugging along. What's a BU of corn these days? I assume it's moving up?

I have been buying gold and silver since the mid 90's, whenever I had the extra cash to do so. Bought Barrack Gold and Newmont mining in Jan./06, but will probably roll them over into hard currency(gold,silver) in the near future. It will work out, but a lot of people will lose everything they have in the process. My garden allowed me to put away enough food for at least the next 18 months, I have enough wood split for 3 years and the livestock and hunting provide plenty of meat and dairy products. I have several friends who are doing something similar in preperation for whatever might come.

Corn at the elevator today was $3.68/bu., but the megga farmers around here need $4.25/bu. to breakeven. I'll stay with my open pollinated/organic corn, keep a few animals and not worry about where my 3 squares a day will come from.

One of the things Keynes said was that government should juice up the economy in bad times, but he also said that the debts incurred in the bad times should be paid off in the good times. Congress just neglected to read the second part.

Well, I agree with you on one thing, I don't believe we are heading for a depression now. A case for a depression could have been made back in December 08 but that's no longer the case due in no small part to the govs bailout actions of the past 6 mo's and the Fed dropping int rates to near zero. It wasn't all done intelligently though such as allowing AIG & BOA handing out huge bonus's with OUR money. They claim it's to enable them to retain talent, what talent? Talent at ripping off the public? Also the TARP that Hank Paulson was in total charge of was like a Chinese fire drill. IMO he was way out of his depth.
As far as bailing out GM goes while I hated the idea it did save 1000's of jobs and an industry that is the life blood of a big chunk of this country and last I heard GM will be able to pay back the loan 3 years earlier and we taxpayer will probably actually make a profit in the end.
You made an error about the price of gold going down as demand goes up but I think you're aware of that.

In my life I've bought & sold 7 houses including a 21 acre farm so I know a little bit about real estate. Your idea about buying 10, $10,000 houses is intreguing(sp) but unless you have a team of carpenters, roofers, plumbers, electritians etc at your beck & call to repair & maintain these properties you are gonna wind up with nothing but a heart attack trying to handle such an endeavor. Any house that can be bought for 10 grand is going to be a slum crack house which has been abandoned and vandalized. If one could turn a 10K house into a 50K in 18 months people like Warren Buffet would be doing it.
