The pressures causing stress in today's modern world certainly don't make for a peaceful contented life.

The feeling of needing to compete, too, can cause a kind of desperation in some.

though Jim Carrey has different notions on it, with this quote:-

“Desperation is a necessary ingredient to learning anything, or creating anything. Period. If you ain't desperate at some point, you ain't interesting.”wine

Well, as long as desperate men are quiet and not openly desperate; I say good...live in quiet desperation because there is nothing more unattractive than a desperate man who openly acts like it and if they are quietly desperate they should find ways to come out of that desperation and find some joy in life no matter what it may be. grin

The completion foyour quote:=

“Most men lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them.

Henry David Thoreau

This would suggest, (to me anyway),that the quiet desperation stills the creativity in a man........that the desperation stops their best effort from being produced. I'd agree with my understanding of this view, for I have experienced similar things happen in my life in times of quiet desperation.

(Very much in contrast/opposition to what Jim Carrey said.) Maybe it depends on the man. Some thrive on the challenges that desperation brings.

Thanks for filling that out Ginger.
Your interpretation is how I understood it.

Some days yes.

Some days no.

Times of quiet desperation often come just before times of change, and not everyone has the courage to change.......hug

I would change the word lead to follow.

If someone were to lead desperate lives they might actually include singing. guitar I know, it makes it unquiet then but so what. giggle

I'd say alot of peoples lives fall short of their aspirations, everyone has to attempt to bury their sorrow, problems and aggression that is all part of 'civilization' it has absolutely nothing to do with being male.

I'd love to party with you and Ooby Dooby some time.I'd never have to worry about the music suiting me.
But I'd probably be conscripted to roll all the smoke instead of just living quietly in my head......quietly but not desperately.
