I was driving this morning and i hit a poor dog that just ran out in front of me i feel so bad and i am blaming myself because i had time to stop but i thought the dog was going to stay where it was but then at the last second it ran out in front of me i would have stoped earlier but there was alot of traffic behind me and ahead of me and i was scared in case i would cause the car behind me to hit me from behind moping

Has anyone else being in a situation like this before
Was i in the wrong to not have stoped earlier ?

hey, listen...you made a decision and did what you could.....its happened to many I'd say...my window cleaner wrote off his car, trying to avoid hitting a dog. he swerved one way, then the dog backtracked and he swerved again...wrote off his car and was unable to work coz of his injuries......

Well you werent to blame if the dog ran out in front of you and you took that split second decision to continue on driving as you could have cause a pile up crash...hug Sorry to hear you were in such a sad situation but it wasnt your fault.teddybear

if mammy and daddy had kept the dog in the garden then the poor young kid wouldnt be getting bad news....its against the law now to let your dog roam.....grin

Yes you should have stopped earlier but I guess if it would have caused more accidents it may not have been possible - can't really judge without seeing the accident first hand.

Please please please tell me you contacted someone about it????

My own dog was hit a few months ago and I'm still gutted about it. It was my neighbour/landlord who hit my dog - he was doing 60 easily on a tiny one track narrow road - and we were walking along it and the leash broke, I made a grab for my dog but just missed and he kept on barrelling on - over my dog - over his head actually causing severe spine and brain damage - he stopped - stuck his head out the window shouted 'sorry' and sped on like it was an F1 race he had to complete. What a total dickhead - he never came over to truely appologize or offer to help with the vet's bills (1000euro) - So please please please tell me you contacted the owner or who you thought may have been the owner?

I hit a cat once (was in pieces myself and didn't drive afterwards for a few days I was in shock of it all) and the owner had seen it happen - the cat shot out of the house/driveway and straight infront of me in a split second there was no avoiding it - I screeched my car to a halt in the road and jumped out with me and the owner arriving at the same time to the scene I was crying and appologizing profusely - I insisted on taking the owner and cat to the local vet and I payed every bit of the vets bill for her - she was so grateful and kept telling me it was ok - the cat lived with a broken leg thankfully - and even afterwards a few days later when I felt I could drive again I went back to her house with flowers and cat treats to check in - she was a lovely old lady and kept thanking me and saying how kind I was - I personaly felt it was the LEAST I could do after hitting her poor cat.

So if what happened to you happened - please tell me you made some type of ammends?? Pets to owners are like kids and to just squash them over in the road is a horrible thing to happen and if there's some kindness or compassion in it it can make the horrific situation a bit more bearable.

Where would you draw the line? Flies? Birds? Rabbits or hares? If the owner cared that much for the dog he/she shouldn't have left it in a position to run out on a busy road. There is no choice to make when it comes to hitting an animal or causing a crash!

Dog owners are responsible at all times for their animal. If your dog had done any damage to the car YOU would have been responsible not the driver. It was not his fault your dog ran off. Did your dog manage to survive with severe spinal damage?

Accidents will happen. It is a horrible feeling if you hit an animal but I'd prefer that to slamming into a wall trying to avoid it or causing a pile up from the rear.

You don't hit the brakes for a dog if it's going to cause an accident like someone rear ending you, though if they did, they would be at fault. The dog shouldn't be out without a lead anyway.

But, by an odd twist of the law, you do have to report it to the gaurds! A cat is oddly enough not considered an animal in law but a dog is, so pop in and report it.

Don't feel bad. Hindsight is a great thing espescially if it's never happened to you before! You'll probably feel guilty for a couple of days but it's a hard situation to avoid.teddybear

FriendlyFeline: Again, YOU were responsible for your dog NOT the driver. He should not offer any compensation as there was no fault with him.

Did you have a speed gun? Was he breaking the speed limit?

I have 3 dogs and I know that when they are on the road it is up to me to make sure they are not a danger to any other road user.
thumbs up
