I say I would have done the same..I love my dog but if Im stupid enough to let it out without a lead on then thats my own fault if it gets a smack of a car...to be called a murderer for it is just mad..maybe diff if you turned to try and hit the dog on purpose..Think id rather hear on the news a dog had been hit than you crash into an oncoming car and kill someone to avoid it

Galwayangel: I was driving this morning and i hit a poor dog that just ran out in front of me i feel so bad and i am blaming myself because i had time to stop but i thought the dog was going to stay where it was but then at the last second it ran out in front of me i would have stoped earlier but there was alot of traffic behind me and ahead of me and i was scared in case i would cause the car behind me to hit me from behind

Has anyone else being in a situation like this before
Was i in the wrong to not have stoped earlier ?

If i may throw in my two cents, I can see both sides.

On one hand, Galwayangel you said she had time to stop but thought the dog was going to stay where he was and then at last second ran out in front of her. Unless you are telepathic, there is no way you will know what the dog was going to do although i would have slowed down just in case but only if it was safe to do so. In these situations, you have to think about yourself, other traffic on the road and the dog. You have to try and anticipate what the person (if it had been a person) or dog is going to do although sometimes that is easier said than done. I wouldn't beat yourself up too much about it. It was a spur of the moment thing and you have to make a decision in a split second. If you had braked hard, you may have been hit by behind by another car causing yourself or other motorists injury, maybe even serious injury so i think you did the right thing under the cirumstances. Did you go back later talk to the owner and find out how badly the dog was hurt?

On the other hand, i can relate to Sativa Soul too because she is angry because the guy who hit her car was speeding and her dog was killed. Now would he have still hit the dog if he wasn't speeding? Its hard to say but I'm guessing probably yes if he didn't see the dog run out in front of him. Would the damage to the dog be as severe? I'm guessing probably not but again its hard to say. I could be wrong here but I'm guessing the reason that sativa soul is angry is because the guy who hit her dog didn't stop at all. He just kept on driving. Now i can't speak for everyone but even though legally it may not have been my fault, i would have felt bad anyway and gone back to check on the dog when it was safe to do so. Most people with a conscience would. He probably figured "well its only a dog so who cares?!". Now some people will probably agree with that drive but i think to some people pets are like family and its wrong to belittle other people's beliefs or feelings. I'm just relieved it wasn't a small child that ran out of in front of him.

As for the faulty leash issue, well sometimes they do snap. The dog could be too strong or the leash could just snap without showing signs of wear and tear beforehand. That does happen...JMO.

skyblue43: Ah ffs there are people here unemployed, those that have had lousy relationships, widows, widowers, people whose businesses are on the line. Real worries, real pain and then i have to watch a girl being called a murderer for hitting a dog on the road. People come on here for a laugh and for some balanced discussion not that sort of off beam hysteria...

She asked for advice and opinions - freely - on a public forum. Not my problem if she isnt getting the comfort and reassurance she wanted. If you dont want to know. Don't ask - especially on a public forum. To each their own opinion.

I did not put up this thread up to be comfort in any way that's what i have family and friends for.
I put up this thread up to get people's advice and opinions on the situation and thanks for everyone that has done that.

I have read the opinions of everyone that posted in this thread and i did not reply in anger or disagree with anyone so again thank's for everyone that has posted it helped alot to have other people's opinions on it.

Where this thread has got out of control is that Sativa Soul told her own story about her dog getting hit she posted this on a public forum and people give her their opinions on it and because she didnt agree with them well that's where it all got abit out of control but that has notting to do with me.

This will be the last time i post on this thread wave

7sins: I make a point of not killing anything with four legs on the road on purpose but birds....any tips?? I can't catch the feathered eared rats

If your commuting to work at half 4 in the morning like myself you will get plenty of opportunities to mow down a few pigeons, they seem to take forever to get off the ground and burst into flight, If your doing about 60mph you would catch them very easily, I`ve killed quite a few but 1 did leave a dent in my front bumbermumbling but it was fun seeing this pigeon turn into a cloud of featherslaugh
Crows are a bit harder to kill, they are more alert and usually get out of the way, 1 bird I can never manage to get is the magpie, I hate them with a passion but they are so alert its unreal they see everything
