I had a love interest in Michigan (8 hours drive). We were ready to meet when someone closer to him appeared out of the woodwork....truly upsetting to say the least

I think it is a minor issue. Especially between US and Canada; not so far and not so culturally removed. More important is the two of you as people and the connection, expectation, and trust between you. In my experience it is the balance of these three.

Distance does bring it's challenges. If you meet and match, then consideration towards your commitments with family, job, finances, etc. come into play. Someone inevitably has to make a big move.

You live closer to eachother than many other people who live in the U.S.
I don't see where it would be different than dating someone who lives in another state, or province.
I don't think the border would matter as much as the distance.
I spent close to a year in a long distance romance; we only spent about a month of that time together.
I don't ever want to do that again.
