After a recent post, I thought I should ask what others are paying there teenagers in pocket money?

When the kid was with the EX, I added $20 per week in private payments to the EX for the kids pocket money? When the kid moved in with me she said her Mum never gave her that money?

When the kid first moved in here I started giving her the $20 per week as what I thought was the norm? since receiving my full family benefits payments part A&B plus rent assistance I increased her pocket money to $40 per week, but as she never seamed to have change for a $50 note it has now become $50 per week, plus I also take her cloths shopping at least once a month plus hand her my
fly-buys gift cards from Coles when I have the available points to cash out, plus she often comes food shopping with me and we end up getting lots of makeup? In the trolley before we get to the checkout?

So how much do you pay your 15 year olds pocket money?

confused cheers

my kids are aged from 5 to 13...
but there is no way I will be paying money like that for my children as 'pocket money'...

My children have set chores that they have to do because they are a part f the family... these are things that I expect them to do...
eg make bed, help perpare meals, clean up kitchen etc...

If they do the set chores they get $1 for each year of their age...

Then there are other JOBS... eg mowing the lawn... helping with the fencing... picking up the manure to put on the vegie garden... putting on a load of washing... finding the floor in the car by clearing out all the junk etc...

These jobs are worth between $2 and $20...

When my kids turn 12 they are given a prepaid phone by me (so I can contact then at their dad's) they then have to buy their own credit...

Take a long hard look...

our 'work' as parents is to raise our children to become independant adults...

What will happen when your daughter moves out - will she have her hand out all the time because you have not taught her the valuable lesson of budgeting...?

If you didn't want to continue dishing out the $50 each week. Wouldn't it be more sensible to ensure you had change, rather than complain it is $50 not $20.

$50 is far too much.

Get change..................easily fixed.

In my opinion $50 is way to much but how do you halve it now she is used to getting that much.dunno You are not teaching her the value of money unless she works her bum off earning that large amount. JMO sigh

$50 wow

Good grief, wish someone would give ME $50 a week just for being me laugh

$50 feeds me for a week, a 15 year old would be beside themselves with joy and happiness to be given that amount, she must be the envy of all her friends uh oh

And then goodies in the grocery shopping as well wow

Nope, all too much .. $10 a week maybe, and anyway, a 15 year old is more than capable of holding down a part-time job and buying their own goodies.

Just a thought confused If you can afford the $50 a week open up a savings account in her name and put $25 a week in it, the other $25 is her spending money. Have the $$$ locked in until she turns 18 or 21 and let her see the $$$ grow. Its teaching her some respect for money and the benefit of saving.thumbs up

Great idea, and it would show the girl what one can achieve by saving, and also it might lead her to thinking this saving money caper is a good idea and continue with it.thumbs up

Well someone is going to grow up to be an entitled little brat. $50 is too much for doing nothing.

She might be doing lots of housework and lawns etc. We really dont know anything except dad loves and spoils his princess. I just hope she is earning it. We all know the "money doesnt grow on trees" story.purple heart

Well i'm only going off the information given but I hope with that kind of money comes responsibility. A child has to earn pocket money. Not just have it given to them or they will grow up with an undeserved sense of entitlement. She definitely will grow up to be a 'princess' with that kind of upbringing.

How did your parent's raise you? There are reponsibilities she'll need to learn once she move's out, being her parent, might be an idea to guide her and teach her about saving money, i can see her relying on you in the future to 'bail' her out...i think it's important as a parent to bring up our kid's ready for the adult world when it comes. We all know how bills can pile up, and without any money put aside, your girl will be asking for more 'handouts'...Please, remember, the way to your daughter's heart is not through money, sometime's you need to give her some lesson's she might not agree with, but in the future, if you guide her the right way, she'll be grateful for 'the $20 you started putting into an account once a week that got her a car in the end'....dunno

Let her open up her own bank account, tell her to start practising her signiture, get her ready for the adult world to come, sit down with her, talk to her, help her learn what's out there...trust me, she'll love you for it ;) AND she'll be proud of herself once she see's how much SHE saved!!wine

My kids pocket money changes as to what they do to contribute to the family , what ever they acrew they need to bank 50%.
$50 per week is ok if they have to budget their own clothes or something otherwise you may very well be funding a future drug habit ....

I would say from what I have just been reading, your daughter is going alright laugh

Don't think I had a set amount for pocket when boys were younger.
I used to pay one for mowing lawns everyweek for years and the other one had a part time milking job. But I did give money to them when they needed it, so set amount - just depended on what it was for.

But going off what others have said, I would probably agree that $50.00 a week is probably a bit much, since you are also providing clothing & personal items.

Hey, but on a good note, you are doing good as a dad, sounds like she has got it good laugh wine

Her jobs are getting her self up to go to school each day? Without an adult pushing her out the door to be there on time? (I start work at 6am?) she starts school at 8.15am?
She is year 11 this year top A student for the first time?
She cleans her room better than I do mine?

Yes she helps out without the nagging? I never have to ask her to do something? There has never been an argument in our home?

The government are now paying me $429.00 per fortnight for her living with me for the last year, that also saves me from the $320.00 per week child support? So that’s a thousand dollars per fortnight in my pocket for the next two years? Maybe more if she gets into higher education? I stand to loose $129.00 per fortnight, when we move into are own home due to loss of rent assistance, but I think I can handle that in my budget?

Today she had two friends over after school for an hour, she reminded them that her dad was totally awesome at least three times in that hour? While we all just sat at the kitchen table? Talking?

So you heard it here first! I am an awesome Dad?

MY pocket money was always attached to my chores...If it all got done then I got my money...If it didn't then the money went on other things.

Plus my mum raised me on her own...So it was always tight and a struggle...So I never did bug her for money...Maybe for a night out at the movies or someones birthday.

Plus I was always an outside kid...So didn't need money to play in the great outdoors.

Though I get life is far different now and I would have no clue to what to pay a kid laugh

I would say one great thing Blizzard...She sounds like her head is on straight and she's an asset to you and how you raised her. So well done I say wine

when my kids were little they got pocket money for doing little jobs here and there..no way did they get anywhere near amounts of money like $50... I couldnt afford to give them that much.. they would have had more then me each week to spend if I gave them that much!! laugh

as they got older and started wanting things that cost more money like nike shoes etc they had to save half of the money for whatever it was they wanted

once they went to high school and turned 15 they both got jobs at maccas and they then paid for their own things all the time.. if they wanted a mobile phone and credit, they paid for it, if they wanted to go out to movies and things like that, they paid for it

once they were old enough to get youth allowance, that paid for their board $50 one week to me, $50 the next week to their dad, and it paid for their clothes and school expenses
