Last year I was given (yes, given) an acreage for looking after an old fellow while his nieces tried to find him a long-term case facility. The one niece came all the way out here from BC, the other came in from Melfort. The old fellow had another niece, who lived across the street from me, and about two blocks from his house, and complained she was "too busy" to help out. The old guy passed away on the day I was given the title to the old acreage he used to live on. How's that for coincidence?
Last Spring I began knocking the old farmhouse down that was on the acreage, taking my time in order to salvage anything that was salvageable, such as antique oil lamps, an icebox, a washboard, several windows, a hand-crank cream separator, several pieces of enamelware, and other odds and sods. The house itself came down board by board. Lots of the wood was rotten, but some of it was perfectly good.
This is farm country, and many of my neighbours are farmers. You'd think that, being farmers, they would be in pretty good shape.
Not so.
You've never seen so many guys with bad knees, bad backs, bad hips, swaybacked from having pot guts, that sort of thing. Bodies ruined by years of hard work? Nope. Bodies ruined by doing NO physical work, letting the machinery do all the work instead, and having their feeble bodies pounded to goo by riding around all day.
The generation before them are in much better shape. There are plenty of spry old guys in their 90's. They're trim, still in good shape, many of them still farming.
This sort of thing must skip generations, because the guys my dad's age (my dad himself was in great shape- he was a jock) are as lazy as the young guys these days. Don't know how to work up a sweat, won't lift a finger, couldn't run a block without suffering a heart-attack.
I don't understand how they can stand themselves like that. They treat physical work like it's a punishment to be avoided at all costs.
I mustn't be TOO lazy cos I did read your post all the way through
Basically people seem to be getting lazier as far as physical exertion is concerned - it seems to go from one extreme to the other, those who get amongst it and those who never do.
Many people I know pay someone to mow their lawns, do their housework and so on, when they are quite capable, and have the time, to do it themselves. Or they pay top dollar for "labour-saving devices" such as leafblowers rather than pick up a rake or a broom.
I'm getting older now, but as long as I can push that mower and dig that garden as well as hold down a fulltime job, I'll continue to do it myself.
It keeps me active and healthy and is very satisfying

Yes, but we do stuff that makes others go... OMG... like going up the roof to clean gutters, blow away leaves, yes we dig, make our gardens nice, and yes, hold down a full time job..
I did get rid of my lawn, not because I couldn't mow it, but due to the water restrictions, and built my own footings and walls to tier the garden down...

Why are people lazy today... cause they can the goverment gives them money to stay home. I have a hard time finding decent workers they hate my type of work especially the younger generation so frustraing people want to earn money but not work for it.

I happen to love it. Keeps me young.
IF i understood the whole thread well the answer is that is perfectly normal for the ppl to be lazy when asked to work for free( you asked them to help you didnt ya? thats how youlearned about heir health problems P.S. a more suspicious mind would find it too confinient the fact that you was given the acreage the day the old man died

Since time began older people have always accused the younger generation as not being as hardworking as they were/are.
Give the nieces the benefit of the doubt.Maybe they don't know how to take apart a house themselves?Maybe they don't know how to distinguish between trash and treasure? Maybe they truly are busy with their own lives and don't want to sacrifice time for family, friends, and work so that they can pull apart a house and pick through garbage for weeks?
I think that many people are in many Countries no longer have the same drive as they used too simply because most basics that we need to live are now a given, along with many none essentials live tv,washing machines.computers, consoles and other "luxuries". Motivation and drive is now much more dependent on ambition and personal goals than providing lifes essentials I think.
Then we wonder why people from much poorer countries wish they where us and try to join us in our Countries?
