wish I could look at it and laugh ... there are still areas of the UK where they cannot sell the lamb because it has too high a radioactive level .... you would be surprised just how many professional people moved here from Europe because of that nuclear accident and the resulting contamination of food supplies ... no government is going to tell you the truth ... political suicide is not an option for a career politician ...

The Riots are just a complete disregard and disrespect by mindless youth... However, the bit where these youth forced people to strip naked, tells me that there is a measure of control and lack of respect for humanity there as well.

I heard on the radio tonight that the sale of base ball bats increased by 6000% in the last few days... that speaks volumes too.

whowhatwherewhen: Why dont the majority....the people go out and do something. We, the people, outnumber everyone. Yet, we have too many moral, ethical dilemmas going on when it comes to dealing with these situations. We are too law-abiding, allowing criminals to now, as we see, run riot.

And we let them.

3 of the majority you speak of are dead this morning having been mowed down by a car last night as they stood with others protecting their property. Any more advice from the other side of the world would be appreciated. Perhaps they too should emigrate.dunno

I hope you are not being sarcastic and I think the idea of them emigrating was suggested long ago ... remember the Rivers of Blood speech from Enoch Powell?? I would never defend any of those rioters but I am trying hard to understand why it is happening because it is only if we understand things can we work out how to avoid it happening again. I will be back in the UK next week for a few months ... I do have a good handle on what is going on over there but like everyone else I have no answers ... I don't sit sniping from the other side of the world with no emotional involvement ... I care very much what is happening ...my family and friends are living through it

I have been living in this lovely country for over 28 years. But it is now New Zealand's turn for un-rest. It is sad that I have family there also and I was very worried about them. So I hope now that this problem that was created over one person can and will come here soon. I just hope that people will soon show that my country is still a great country. In fact it is at least a 1,000 times better than here. My country as had to put up with moaning kiwis, Muslim terreist and many other things. So when people run down England they should think again cos if it wasn't for Britain New Zealand wouldn't exist.

We felt for what was going on in the UK. I dont believe anyone was running down England. Its a shame you wish the same unrest and violence on the Country you now reside in. Tell me, if the UK is 1000 times better than NZ, why have you been here for 28 years?

Why are you talking about moaning kiwis? If Britain is so much better than here why are you still here ... are you one of those whinging poms who constantly talk about 'back home"? When was the last time you were back in the UK for any period of time? I am back once or twice a year for a few months at a time and it is nothing like it was in the 1980's.

A very good article and right on the mark in many ways ... but to negate the social deprivation as part of the problem is something that I disagree with him on. I do think it is all part and parcel of the problem along with the fact that there will never be jobs for them all and a lot of them are incapable of learning new skills ... how strange that a liberal left winger like me now thinks that national service could be part of the answer to instilling some personal pride and self respect into these young people ... oh dear now I've blown my street cred !

Yes, there are socially deprived families on that same housing estate that was on tv in Hackney (only a mile or so from me) who wouldn't dream of having that attitude, but there are lot that do and no, don't worry about the National Service quip. I would not want to see these yobs going out to fight our wars. I don't want a weapon in their hands, but some sort of boot camp would be great.

We had a programme series in the UK called Bad Lads Army which you could watch on this link:

It turned round some deliquents. Perhaps watch it if you get the time. As I said I wouldn't want them to be in touch with a weapon, but tasks to help them achieve, get fit, have some pride etc would be good, plus of course get them trained to do something like gardening, electrician/plumbing skills etc., or if they show an aptitude for something else then it needs encouraging.

Lerie2010: I have my daughter working in central London and thank goodness her partner, who is a big hunk of a man, is there with her .. he went to collect her from work yesterday to make sure she got home safely. I am heartbroken to see what is happening to the land of my birth, I have felt the tension there on every visit for over ten years and it feels as there is a pent up anger underlying all of society.

Politics will never solve the problems because they are far more deep rooted than mere politics ... it is a sense of having no real control over your future, the pensioners have lost their hard earned money in the collapse of banks and building societies and the young married couples can only exist on credit and are up to their ears in debt. The young people, even those with qualifications, are jobless and see no hope for their future.

You talk to the young and old alike and they all feel the same ... they feel like they are having their lives controlled by faceless men who sit on the boards of multinational companies and who play with the economies of whole countries in order to benefit themselves ... these kids watch all the conspiracy theory programs and know that something is going on and they are just pawns in the game.

And politicians are in utter denial, they just talk of criminals and thugs and that it is not acceptable, bla bla bla! There is nothing to hope for when the top politicians don't wish to look deeper in the root of problem.

I don't think these kids even watch conspiracy theory programs, but they feel frustration, and as they are uneducated and unable to articulate their frustration, they just vent it in violent ways.

Yes I'm over in the UK a lot and saw the program and it was on the UKTV chanel over here too ... a little humiliation seems to help if I remember correctly ... and I agree with you on the idea of giving them any kind of weapon would be risky to say the least ...yep train them in a skill and give them some pride in themselves .. they say you have no respect for others until you have respect for yourself ..

What worries me is that it will just increase racial tensions and also gives the government the excuse to introduce more draconian legislation to control the population ... and that isn't always a good thing for civil liberty.

I think if you live in a nice big house, drive a nice big car, have holidays overseas, expense account lunches and dinners, a system where you can charge everything to the taxpayer and be as corrupt as hell and get away with it .... well why would you bother trying to address the social problems ... you're outside of society just looking in doh I personally like George Galloway he sees the real world.

From George Galloway's website...

Riots and condemnation without context

by John Wight

Just as the explosion of social unrest that has engulfed working class communities all over London are a predictable outcome to the enormous economic and social pressure said communities have been under as the Tory-led coalition government doles out its punishment to the poor and the working class in response to an economic recession not of their making, and with the tension that has long existed between the alienated youth of our inner cities and the police, so has been the response by the political class and mainstream commentators.

Condemnation without context has been the stock in trade of those sitting at the apex of society, as they seek to explain away the unrest as nothing more than “wanton acts of criminality” or the actions of “mindless thugs”.

While this may be the accepted truth according to the norms of polite society, it fails utterly to get at the root causes. But no one should be under any illusion that this failure is the product of ignorance. On the contrary it is exactly as intended. Assorted right wing commentators and politicians clearly have a vested interest in refusing to admit their own culpability in shaping a society more unequal than at any time since Charles Dickens was in his pomp as a searing critic of Victorian barbarism in the treatment of the nation’s poor and working class over a century past.

The current outburst of social unrest being played out on the streets of the country’s major cities has been cultivated over decades in the nation’s boardrooms and state rooms by a class which in its greed, venality and looting of society’s surplus do more damage to the nation’s social fabric in one hour than gangs of marauding disaffected and alienated youth have done over the past few nights of rioting and looting. The only difference between the two is in scale and aesthetic.

Indeed, what we have seen being played out these past few nights is stark evidence, as if any more were needed, that we are living in two Britains. One is populated by the rich and the connected, the children of inherited wealth, status and ostentation, living in rich ghettoes like Chelsea, Kensington, Notting Hill and their equivalents in cities and towns across the country. Theirs are lives of luxury and comfort; people for whom recession is merely an abstract word in the dictionary with no concrete meaning in their day to day lives. It is their moral values and the lie that obscene wealth, status and individual success constitute the pinnacle of fulfilment and human happiness that dominates the nation’s culture and media, driving the blanket condemnation of those normally invisible members of society, the children of the lower orders in their eyes, for daring to raise their heads and assert their will in a mass carnival of rioting and looting; the only recourse to self expression and self assertion left those who are expected to suffer in silence.

Of course, the looting and rioting we’ve seen engulf London, Manchester and the West Midlands over the past few nights by predominately young people has not been undertaken out of any concrete political or even progressive motivation. It is however driven by a primitive and instinctive rejection of a society that has long since rejected those and the parents of those involved. Gang culture grows out of need not desire, the need to inhabit an alternative society to the one whose values, culture, lexicon and laws are associated with a status quo that has clearly and unequivocally been stamped out of bounds. In other words the norms of polite society are as alien to those rioting and looting as they themselves are to those in power proffering condemnation from the vantage point of lives defined by comfort, respectability and social status.

It is said that a criminal act is an act of unconscious rebellion, certainly those criminal acts motivated by personal material gain. A spontaneous eruption of unrestrained and destructive liberation on the part of young people who from hard experience have early imbibed the most basic lesson of any capitalist society - namely that in life you don’t get what you deserve, you get what you take – has left mainstream opinion formers and politicians alike verily bursting with self righteous indignation.

The sight of politicians, members of a class who’ve been looting the public purse for years, clogging our TV screens to pour vitriol on those involved in the rioting and looting of shops and businesses has been stomach churning to behold in its hypocrisy.

The surprise isn’t that this unrest is taking place. The surprise is that is hasn’t taken place sooner, with Bertolt Brecht explaining the phenomenon most succinctly when he wrote, “The law was made for one thing alone, for the exploitation of those who don’t understand it, or are prevented by naked misery from obeying it”.

As David Cameron et al. look on with horror at the devastation that is being wrought around the country perhaps they would do well to consider that as with Oscar Wilde’s Dorian Gray, they are merely looking at a grotesque reflection of themselves and the society of greed, rampant consumerism and individualism which their class has forged.

Actually Galloway was one of the few politicians who refused to accept his parliamentary expenses.
Many others claimed tens of thousands over and above what they were rightly due...by serious deceit, lies and deception also.
