Merriweather: I just want to see if anyone agrees with me here..

I like dogs.. have owned them in the past, but for many many years I have come to (my) an opinion that its hard to own a dog these days, as most of us work.

That is the thing that bothers me.. If we leave the house for 12 hrs a day, how do you reconcile with leaving a dog for that long on its own. Surely boredom and mischief come to mind, let alone not socialising.
Then of course, when you come home, tired and its raining or cold, or too hot.. and get greeted with joy... you can just about see the dog saying...
"Hello, its my time now"...
while in your mind you are saying to yourself, Oh thank goodness, "its me time now..."

I wonder if this is the case, or just me imagining the worst...?

ps( I did not work when I had a dog)
you answered your own qtn there Miss Merri (i think)confused

Merriweather: Hi Serene

Yes, the tie you down part... I had forgotten that part... but now that you mention it... When I was staying with Solsticemoon in Spain last year, she had 2 dogs.. one a pitbull staffy and one right mongrel but nice mongrel.. We took the dogs walking most days.. I got to see bits of local coastline and it was fun. Her nicest dog was the pitbull staffy, she looked mean ,,, just to observe with her yellow eyes, but actually was the sweetest 'lambikins' as she was playfully called. Since then, another dog has arrived to join the household.. I have been trying to get Sols to come over here to mine, but her problem... you guessed it... what do you do with 3 dogs for 4 weeks to come over here.. ? Too hard.

Sounds like your grandson puppy is an older puppy ???

Yes, he was nearly two when I took him, and is now approaching ten.

We've been for a morning walk every day since then, sometimes in the afternoon as well if I'm home and it's a nice day.

He would definitely miss me if I went away for an extended period, but I'm sure he would survive for a couple of weeks, he adores my daughter too.

He's a totally devoted little guy, and we're growing old together lol.

Awwwh, I am so glad you have such a good relationship.. Love the way you described your puppy...

I guess with my son living next door, and his Rotty ( that we put down in May) I do miss not having a dog about to take walking... I used to walk the old fella, but as he got older, the walks had to be shorter.. I miss him so much really..

Merriweather: I bet you are well pleased that your dogs like each others company..cute...

What would you do tho, if your neighbors reported the opposite and instead said they howled all day?

That thought seriously scares me! Am lucky now, but am always conscious of making sure they are on their best behaviour at all times (well mostly.... When they go outside and sometimes yap late at night I call them in quick smart so they disturb noone!

When I travel away I am very lucky cos I have a relative who dog sits very happily for me. grin

People at work have advertised for someone to pet sit for them and been successful at low to no cost - so your foreign friend should try that, or a relative? Kennels are way too expensive but always a fall back option.

Yeah the happiest outcome for the dog is when someone can come have a holiday at your place to care for them.

My dog would have a nervous breakdown if I took him to a boarding kennel laugh

Gosh, you are well lucky Toffee... to have someone you know come and dog sit for you... It must be a huge weight off your mind.. Well done...

As for Solsticemoon ( CS lass) , its going be well hard.. Spain is not at all like here.. although, she is friends with a few ex CS memebers around her area, and both are animal lovers... We'll see... sigh

thats why I have 2 cats now. They just curl up and sleep all day, open one eye when you get home.

I kennel mine, it costs $15each/day. So yes it is expensive. I'll be honest and say that they do miss us when we go away for anything more than overnight. They turn into purring, drooling, numpties when they get home from the cattery after a few days.
