The whols house shook and rattled. i never felt anything like that before I thought a train just drove through the house. The shaking seemed to be from east to west about 3 inches amplitude at a frequency of about 2 cycles per second. Now my cell phone wont work.

Just been reported on the BBC news, 5.6 on the Richter Scale.

Yes, you just had one a few minutes ago. Near Washington DC but in Virginia, felt also in Manhattan, NY.
Had one earlier in Colorado, southern part near the Ok/Tx border it was a 5.3 Think yours was a 5.8

Me too. I was leaning against the kitchen counter and it started shaking and other things in the house were rattling. It was kinda scary.
CNN had this report: Magnitude 5.8 earthquake shakes Virginia, D.C. and New York
I'm 28 miles SW from the epicenter of the earthquake in Mineral VA. I checked the house and nothing is broken. I was especially concerned about water pipes breaking.

Slam your cellphone against the kitchen counter every 5 minutes until it starts working.
That'll keep you busy while the crews repair the cell phone towers.

your first one was a tad TOO CLOSE and TOO STRONG, I bet
Oh, one more thing, I check the height of the water table everyday in the morning and the level dropped 3 inches since I checked it this morning. This could mean the ground has risen that amount but it could also mean the water table dropped I don't know which is which.

Earthquakes rock!
I saw the earth move in waves on Feb. 1st 1971... I saw big avocado trees waving back and forth from the ground to the sky.
The scariest earthquake I ever felt was on Hawaii, the most active volcano on earth... the lava felt like jello slapping the hard sides of the mountan under our feet... it slapped the sides so hard.. it felt like the thin crust of the ground would open under our feet, and drop us into the lava.
A very interesting thing about earthquakes is this... The earthquake that recently tore up Japan was reported as a single local earthquake.
If you look at the calander... and seismic records for in that general time-frame, you will see that there were either lots of earthquakes.. or one big earthquake at the same time.
The Japan earthquake happend right around the same time as the "earthquakes" in China, and most of the Pacific region; I think it was more like 1 big earthquake... which wasn't reported because it would affect the stock market.
Not only that... there was increased seismic activity on the continental US, and in the Atlantic.
The fault that was active in the southern US, around the time of the recent earthquake in Japan... is the same one that caused the Mississipi River to run backwards in the New Madrid earthquake... which occured some time ago.
Yellowstone Park is home to a supervolcano, and it's also been more active.
According to authourities... the earthquake that finishes splitting an island in the Atlantic will be the one that sends a major tsunami against the East Coast of the U.S.
There was increased seismic activity in all those places when the earthquake hit Japan.
I very much felt it here too, Ooby...It was the strangest feeling in the world! I wasn't sure if it actually was an earthquake or what was happening there for a while! I would hate to feel a bigger one! That was something! Ken.
