StillOfTheNight: I have learned that sometimes a musical style can reveal a persons personality, and sometimes it won't. All depends on the person
I agree. I rarely listen to music anymore. In fact, I had about 400 CD's and gave all but 50 of them away and I don't even listen to them. Almost any song that I would listen to relates to my last relationship and that's not cool so now I don't listen to music. I don't miss it.....it's just the way it has to be for now. If I meet someone that I'm comfortable with, I'll list to music again and relate it to the person I'm with, not someone from the past...

Ambrose2007: Or perhaps we're merely born with a particular sense of life (genetically determined)?
Some is genetic other is environment and there is the relation between both of them.
"nature's influence is strongest on appreciation of pop, classical and hip-hop music - indicating some people may be born to love Michael Jackson, Beethoven or Jay-Z."
"Previous studies have shown that perfect pitch ability appears to be partly inherent and with as much as 50% of our musical taste being predetermined, it appears there is a strong argument for the existence of 'music genes'" says Adrian North, Professor of Psychology at Heriot Watt University"
Genetic influence ranking by genre;
Under 50s - 56% Jazz/blues/soul - 55% Pop/classical/rap/hip-hop - 53% Rock/indie/heavy metal - 0% Country/folk
Over 50s - 43% Pop/classical/rap/hip-hop - 42% Jazz/blues/soul - 34% Rock/indie/heavy metal - 28% Country/folk
Born to buy music, but not to listen to it While genetic influence on the music we like (55%) is clear, genes have a significantly lower influence (25%) on our motivations for listening to music. According to the research, listening habits are influenced by a desire to soundtrack our day, wanting to set a mood, or simply to enjoy the listening experience rather than any 'play music now' gene.".
I figure to start with music was a way to communicate over a longer distance....so it was simply a tool to communicate ...and also to hunt ...say a group walks though the jungle beating drums and scaring the prey into awaiting tribesmen on the far side of the jungle.
Later that night they used music to tell the tale of the hunt around the fire as they eat...this could also be the start of dance to simply tell a story ...
and in many ways it is still used for these purposes...

oops sorry ....yes it may reveal your personality SOMETIMES...others times maybe just cause you wanted to hear that type for nothing more than enjoyment.

Music as a communication tool without language in it, interesting approach.

lifeisadream: Why not?
Many are influenced by what they hear on commercial radio which is mostly music that is made to sell to the public often coming from big record labels ran by and controlled by business men not musicians. I'd prefer someone that thinks about what sounds they would like to hear then finds or creates them.
Here is a nice little quote;
We are the music makers, And we are the dreamers of dreams, Wandering by lone sea-breakers, And sitting by desolate streams;— World-losers and world-forsakers, On whom the pale moon gleams: Yet we are the movers and shakers Of the world for ever, it seems.
Arthur William Edgar O'Shaughnessy, Music and Moonlight(1874)
Some suggest that the origin of music likely stems from naturally occurring sounds and rhythms. Human music may echo these phenomena using patterns, repetition and tonality. Even today, some cultures have certain instances of their music intending to imitate natural sounds. In some instances, this feature is related to shamanistic beliefs or practice. It may also serve entertainment (game) or practical (luring animals in hunt) functions.
Even aside from the bird song, monkeys have been witnessed to beat on hollow logs. Although this might serve some purpose of territorialism, it suggests a degree of creativity and seems to incorporate a call and response dialogue. See: zoomusicology.

"I'm not writing music that's composed for the penguins, ... I'm writing music for the people watching the penguins and thinking about how they feel. And I'm thinking about how I might feel in that situation." Alex Wurman

See now he's a film composer, makes music to enhance the visual experience. I do get what he is saying and thats the position you have to take on in order to compose for film. But i prefer artists that try to materialise thoughts and ideas without limitations or financial influences. An artist that does art for their own satisfaction and if a few people get their idea thats great. Because honestly the greatest pieces of art in this world very few actually have the mind tools to get. Just my opinion.

Let us explore Another point of view like the one Ambrose was refering to several times.
Does intelligence choose the band? Or does music define how smart we become? Where do your favorite bands appear? Do you think that music can make you dumb?
